I was walking down a lane in a village near Limoges this afternoon when I came across this. It may not be cool but it's certainly authentic. I got talking to the owner, a very friendly French peasant-looking type, who told me he bought it new in 1984 and he had never needed anything else. 'Tres solide et tres fiable Monsieur' (very solid and very reliable) he said. 'Why would I need another?

Driving home from the spot above I passed a farm gate near Oradour-sur-Glane where there was a 'barn find' looking Citroen XM with a for sale sign on it. You hardly ever come across a CX these days but I think the XM actually has a following. Two friends of mine had them and liked them very much. One replaced his with a new C6 and now drives an Audi A7, saying he'll never buy another Citroen again.
Well, my last two spots might not have been anything special but get this. Today I found myself up a back street in Limoges - I'm not sure I'd ever find it again - and spotted a Peugeot 403 and a very tidy 2-door Volvo Amazon.
And then, behind a half-smashed glass frontage across the road I spotted this. At first I thought it was just another Citroen or big Renault. But no. It's a Voisin. In all my 66 years I've never seen one in the metal. Gabriel Voisin was an aircraft designer and his early attempts at motors were once described as penned by a man who knew all about cars but had never actually seen one. Well, I was impressed. It has the fantastic art deco radiator mascot and (I think) a sleeve-valve aero-type engine. I still can't believe my eyes. It's registered and insured for the road too.
