It's that time of year when the MGBs are out and about once more. Has anyone, honestly, ever seen one on a motorway or dual carriageway going faster than 55 mph in the inside lane? I even had one wave at me as I went past at [what was that you said, Officer?] mph in me Lancia the other day, the cheeky get. Yesterday I had the great pleasure of watching two Central Casting BBC lesbians in a Morris Minor convertible overtaking a standard issue MGB bloke. Oh well, diff'rent strokes and all that. Happy summer, classic car nerdz!

Mine did, but it wasn't a classic in those days, so just another car.

That is my point. They are cars (not very good cars, but still cars), and should be driven like cars, but you never see one than isn't chugging along.

I'm 21 (not the usual mgb owner!) and have a typical mgb (red with chrome wires etc) and can confirm they will, I don't hang around in mine and people do seen shocked when you overtake. However much more than 70 things get a tad scary. hehe

They're not bad cars, I love mine, a nice change from my Eurobox daily, but they do have an old man image. I've been to the odd show with mine and a majority (although not all) of the owners are the said retired couple who sit there with deck chairs with tea flasks never venture about 55 on the way home!

I know what you mean but, yes, the chap who used to sprint race his 300bhp V8 MGBGT in the same series as me a few years back didn't hang around. He could get round Lydden Hill in the same time as my Caterham... He did have 70s proportion huge slicks on though :-)

My other half's MG Midget happily sits at a genuine 70mph for long distances and it's only the short gearing that stops you cruising faster so I'd have thought an overdrive MGB would be more than happy. So no excuse for 55 then!

The only "excuse" they need is that's what they want to do.

The steering shakes too much in mine at anything over 55mph and apart from that I never go much above 70 in anything I drive on the road so when I'm driving the MGB It's to enjoy driving the car not to rush around everywhere.

I take it that the OPs original question was a rhetorical one???

With nearly 400,000 MGBS produced there's bound to be a few that will go quicker than 55mph. My own example will easily do double that. Maybe it's a reflection on the more typical MGB driver - but then I'm an OAP and I don't hang about hehe

Mine (BGT) happily cruised at 70mph. With the roof down on a roadster I can see people might prefer to go slower, but the cars are more than happy to go faster!

I've had mine (GT) at 0.9 leptons which was very noisy and slightly scary. I also overtake in it and try to surprise people in the traffic light grand prix.

I'm not doing this right am I? wink

Then If I need to go much faster my other car comes into the picture because I prefer a tin-top over my head when really pushing on . the convertable is not kind to my hair at high speeds, need to preserve the hair it has too last a lifetime

This would probably be the only view of my MGB V8 that Breadvan 72 could hope to obtain if he happened to be out and about in his Jensen as I seldom observe the NSL.
