Looking for a classic for the summer to do up. Ideally a two seat sport cars but others have been considered.

What I've been looking at recently:
MG Midget/AH Sprite MK 2/3/4
VW Golf MK 1/2
VW Scirocco MK 1/2
Ford Fiesta MK 2

Any other ideas?

The Scimitar is very similar in looks to the Scirocco, what would be the better option?

Well the scimitar won't have anything like the same amount of rust issues as a mark 1 rocco, what are parts like for the scimitar?

If you've been looking at MG Midgets have you also looked at the other side of the BL coin, the Triumph Spitfire?

I have always liked the shape of the Lotus Excel. Usable ones can be found for that kind of money and like the Scimitar suggestion, won't have the body rot issues of the MG / Scirocco options:-

Otherwise, tired TVR wedges or 'S' cars often crop up for similar money if you're lucky.

Also, as an alternative to the 'rocco, presentable Porsche 944s are available in that price bracket too:-

If you're on a budget you ideally want something where spares are common..
Have you considered a Ford Capri?

There was a red 944 in the PH classifieds for £1995, 2.7 Oval dash in Guards and looked very very tidy.

I'd put my 2k on that.

Or if you want an alternative to the Golf GTi or Fiesta Mk 2, a good 205 GTi project would be great fun:-

Abundant, through Graham Walker or Queens Road Garage.

Not sure about the Scim and Scirocco looking similar though confused

The later SS1's with the 1800cc turbo Nissan motor are quite brisk - light as they are. They post pretty good times at the Curborough sprint meetings (with a little fettling)

Re an Excel. Don't get me wrong a good Excel is nice drive but a good Excel will be more than twice the proposed £2000 budget.

On what planet does any Scimitar look like any Scirocco, or have any other similarities for that matter? Both names start with Sci, I suppose...

You've mentioned a 2 seater sports, but only covered Midget/Sprite. In terms of go kart like chuckability have you considered a Mk1 MR2.

Original MX5, Shirley ticks the 2 seater future classic box and can be had for less, thus leaving a bit of restoration money?

Edited to add
Not just me who thinks it is a future classic then. http://www.classicandsportscar.com/news/general-cl...

I certainly don't disagree, but being honest the OP is looking for a running project type car and I thought a tired Excel would fit the bill. Now I was going to suggest a wedge TVR which would be even more of a challenge....

2nd vote for a Capri, budget gets a decent 4 cylinder or a usable 2.8

Otherwise a 924s

But not with those wheels. Or the blacked out tail-lights...
