Does it have a pillar mid back window? Or is that the reflection from the gendarmes neck? So we could be looking at a small front window and massive pillar less back window?? Highly unlikely but just a thought

I know this isn't it but close I thought. Should we be looking at Lancia?

Lancia Beta Montecarlo
They both have four wheels and a bonnet scoop I suppose.

That's very similar to Columbo's Pug, shame he's not still with us, he might be able to help.

No bonnet vent on it, really really close though.

Amazing no one has confirmed it, pretty mysterious car!

It's been crashed right? I figured that hole that everyone is calling a 'vent' wasn't original wink

I think we need to send it over to the FBI.

To me it's a Fiat of some kind, very likely coach built.

See:

1100ES

With the front end of this:

1957 Fiat Turismo Veloce Coupe Concept by Pinin Farina

And the a-pillars of say, this:

Abarth 750

The original website that featured the photo has, I think a clearer enlargement of the vehicle. Especially on the front end and maybe some of the lower detail. I hope the PH'er who originally enlarged the picture won't be offended with me posting it.

Another source for someone with time on their hands to go through it is here:

http://www.automobile-catalog.com/browse.php

Although it's not as comprehensive as the site owners make out and frustratingly there are loads of pictures missing from some of the likely candidates.

The only thing I can add to the discussion is that it must be something out of the ordinary as the passer by has turned his head to look at it whereas if it was just a run of the mill, ho, hum, see them every day model he probably wouldn't.

The thing I'm having difficulty matching is the dome of the roof combined with the rounded top of the side glass and how far forward the 'A' pillar is. There aren't many cars around where a line extending from the bottom of the A pillar meets the front wheel arch.

Is it possible that the rear arches are wide? The chap is hiding this and the shut line.

The front end of that looks very promising.

And the distance between the A-pillar/doorline and the wheel arch is too long

There has been very little response from the members of Autopuzzles - they have been given the "blown-up" photo as well as the original to put the size in context. The only suggestion is that it is a coachbuilt one-off Panhard.

The Autopuzzles site crashed on Sunday, and the editors have been working on the backup files. I don't think we can expect any sort of answer from them for some time.

I swear the style of that front-end is familiar. It looks like the headlamps are almost sitting a little proud of the grille.

It puts me in mind of something I've seen but can't quite place - possibly with a set of "concentric rectangles" as trim/decoration on the grille ?

One of the best so far. Though The nose ahead of the wheel arch isn't long enough
