Yes. The road car record is held by the RM NART Spider, the outright record by the Bonhams W196. That said, I sometimes question all this stuff about records when we all know that some cars are selling privately for loads more than either of those cars made at auction.
I agree entirely. Auction sales do tend to make for more exciting press headlines though; easier to corroborate too!

It'll be fascinating to see what this goes for......I can't see it doing anything other than setting a new record in some style.

In some ways it'll be a shame if it does as they will be used less and less in anger.

World record. Bidding at auction will bring out all the car guys and it will go big.

I think GTOs passed that a long time ago. If you are too afraid to drive a $50m Ferrari it won't be any easier to drive a $20m one.

I sometimes wonder that at this level of hype the "car guys" stay at home and watch the tennis. At this level is not the just super rich who are looking for whatever appears like a good punt and may have a passing interest in cars in the same way they might for art, as opposed to a passion for them? In other words at what point do the cognoscenti bale out and the fools pile in.

A car like this will be concerned, investment wise alongside manhattan apartment blocks and paintings. So $100 million for something which can be used, gets invites to the MOST exclusive parties in the world at locations here you and I could not even contemplate, is a real good investment.

The highest so far, i think someone said was 100mil. In dollars, it pus the value of a GTO alongside this painting by Rubens

There are plenty of more expensive paintings out there...

I hope you are right: if you've got the money to buy it, you've certainly got the money to drive it.
Granted, some people will view this car solely as art or investment, and they will be bidding on it for sure, but if you remember how many cars took part in that European GTO rally two years ago (24 if I recall correctly), I am optimistic that the people who know what such a car is really for will be prepared to bid higher.

I may be wrong, it may keep spiralling upwards forever or simply plateau, but who really wants a classic car world where normal enthusiasts simply can't afford to buy anything?
The rich and wealthy do. wink

I’d guess this will sell well over £40 million, possibly low £50 million

How much is a new fully equipped hospital paediatric wing and the training of a couple of brilliant oncologists? Just sayin'.

Because that is where my (imaginary) $70M would be going. I'd be happy driving round in a knackered Volvo estate after that - I can't help thinking I'd feel better than the tool that has spent $70M dollars to ogle at and polish a 250 GTO.

These kind of things induce mirth personally. And before any accusations fly - Bone Fide died in the wool car nut. This sort of money is Ridonkulous.

The Sunday Times Rich list published recently detailed there are more billionaires than ever who because of the recent publicity surrounding the classic car market being the highest performing asset class of the last fifteen years will be more aware than ever of classic cars as an "alternative investment" - coupled with the fact that they don't make 250 GTO's anymore - all that's needed are two rich individuals who want the same thing when there's only one available !

I think the price paid could be more dependent on ego than investment value - after all, we all want what we can't have and when we've got the cash to stop someone else getting it ego rules over sensibility !

£58 million -ish !

Wonder if it's a Cat C or Cat D then? I do hope the buyer does an HPI check first before he posts on General Gassing bleating that he's bought a lemon.
I'd have thought the fact the first owner was killed driving it would hold the price back a bit.

But it's unique. A true one-off. And a GTO isn't.

I think $75m.

Surprised that it is going to auction. Like many paintings, these top-of-the-tree cars mostly change hands privately with the price a guarded secret. For that reason and since someone won't want the world to know how much he has spent (especially if the market does fall) lower than the last one I feel. £30 million maybe. But who knows? Since that is only part of a banker's annual bonus, even today, it is still small change to some people.

Since when has the fact that can't drive a painting ever had any bearing on its value? Generally speaking, 'art' that you can use costs less that art that you can't. The fact that you can enjoy it, and drive it, is irrelevant to things like markets, greed, avarice and rarity.
