Rather frustratingly, now I have what I thought was sufficient money to buy one the market rises over and above my budget. I realised that the 2dr ship had sailed had been looking to spend around £4k with a view to getting a tidy 4dr and possibly doing a bit of a 'backdate' to early spec - I had a 1982/3 brochure when I was a kid and to me that 'look' was always the one that I liked the most, plus I liked the look of the ones used in A View To A Kill.
It seems that what was £4k 12 months ago is now double that. Is this the case or am I just looking in the wrong places?
I suppose I could always jump on a plane to the continent. Could make an interesting road trip...

Wrong places, I think.
The problem is that it's actually a mine field. There are some excellent, solid cars being sold for under £5k and some rotten dogs for £25k.
I think if you hunted well and knew what you were looking for there are still cheap cars out there. But I think the early 80s 4 doors are the next to go up exactly because their exterior trim makes them look far more 'classic' than the more ubiquitous later cars.

This is true - I bought an ebay special thinking it would be a skip run car and it is superb. The problem is that it's actually a mine field. There are some excellent, solid cars being sold for under £5k and some rotten dogs for £25k.

Have also looked at some superficially shiney ones that are nowhere near as good one you look past the paint - for 5 times the money.

They're like Chelsea & Kensington MILFs. Many look great on the surface but under that surface veneer lies rotten bag of bolts, falling apart rapidly. Have also looked at some superficially shiney ones that are nowhere near as good one you look past the paint - for 5 times the money.

That's the look I was hoping for - get say a '92 and get it to look like an '82. A nice metallic shade, silver 3 spoke wheels etc etc. I know there will be inconsistencies that would be difficult to overcome such as fuel filler, door hinges, mirrors but I can live with that.desolate said:

Bumpers, yes. Although sourcing the older style end caps both 70s & 80s is now costly and using the later bumper would mean no crank handle hole etc. Profile is ever so slightly different I think but I really don't think it would be noticed. Grill is harder. The later ones are one piece clip ins whereas the early style is three piece and screw in but it's not hideously complex. You almost certainly won't be able to source an early front valance.
Door frames would be wrong as they lost the quarter light in the big mid 80s change. As would the internal tailgate lever but it would be interesting to see how a late model looked with the 80s grill/ letters and bumpers.

I may have a tinker and see what the outcome is, although the one I have now is the later metallic green so i am not sure it will look right.
I keep thinking of changing but this is now my 4th one and is so far and away the nicest (and the cheapest) that I keep thinking again!
I would have been best served either wrapping or respraying a hideous Warwick green franken 2-door I had, but such is life.

Have a 1993 Vogue SE. Need five tyres. Any recommendation for a standard size tyre? Car is mostly used on motorway and zero off-road, so ideally would like a quiet and reasonable long lasting tyre.
Online tyres suggest one of two sizes being 235/70R16 / 106 / H or 255/65R16 / 109 / H. 7J factory three spoke wheel.

Why go wider than the standard 225? I've never been convinced that their road handling is enhanced by wider rubber. Online tyres suggest one of two sizes being 235/70R16 / 106 / H or 255/65R16 / 109 / H. 7J factory three spoke wheel.
