What would be your choice with following criteria:

1. Classic car. Pre 1992, or 1995 for imports.
2. Excellent stability. Ability to react in an emergency "dodging" situation without loss of control.
3. Reasonable acceleration well balanced with traction.
4. Excellent cornering - this is where you can compete with moderns.
5. "Enough" braking. Fade isn't too big a deal for fast road driving.
6. Costs under £20k.

Modern tyres and polybushes are assumed.

We see this thread on GG a lot and I'm wondering what CLASSIC car would be chosen for the "extremely fast point to point" role.

I'm going for MkIV Supra TT:

I'm not sure many of us would regard either as a 'classic'

But that's just my opion

Not just your opinion Graeme! - and our answer to the question would probably start with the letter 'V' (and not VW or Volvo - although a T5 would be an interesting post modern contender) and have the steering wheel on the left hand side. I was looking at a friends £12k 56K mile ZR1 at the weekend. (no not for me)

NO contest here - as mentioned above Lotus or Caterham 7
OOI all Lotus 7's are tax exempt Historic vehicles which is a nice bonus and get into any classic car show in UK

Ooooh......that`s a very contentious comment!.....it would make a great thread on its own......could go on for weeks that debate!....where is the cut-off point between an old car and a classic?!?!?............laugh

I remember Paul Matty telling me once that he would put the 'new' elan against almost anything as a point to point car on an A road.

its tricky one, because I rmember back in the late 80s that very late 70s MGBs were widely accepted as "classic motoring".
I think all lot of it depends on the person making the statements age and their own personal perspective. Even though I used to consider some 70s models as classic even back in the late 80s I wouldnt class a 90s car as classic in 2014.. still sturggling to put my finger on a ligitimate reason to differentiate between the two though.

I'd rate this as a bona fide classic - might not be "the fastest" but on mixed roads would put up a pretty good showing... and with the added benefit that you could take your washing machine along for the ride!

Yes that would be my choice too for obvious reasons but the Integral would supersede it once it was sorted out.

In about 1989 (I think) "Car" magazine hailed the Citroen AX-GT as the fastest point-to-point car, short of the Quattro.

Slightly odd question really, if it's up to 1992 the question is actually "what was state of the art in 1992?"

I've got a 10-valve Quattro now and although on paper it's way behind modern stuff, once it's up to speed it's still pretty quick across country, maintains a high average very well indeed.

Yup. There's no real answer and often not a lot of logic.

Maybe it is common to automatically class cars before your driving era as classics but from your era on you are very selective based on personal opinions.

Maybe to be a classic a car just needs to be eligible for classic insurance.

Or maybe it has to have some nostalgia element or define a characteristic.

Maybe a car can't be a classic until a basic modern car does everything better.

Personally, I think classic status is generally achieved when those who googled the car when new are hitting their mid 40s and starting to look back and buy back their childhood. I don't think the car has to be any good, just have a 'charm' and this can come from being an awful car as much as a great one. I do think it needs a story.

I see the Quattro and the Integrale as modern classics but in my head I don't see the Supra as one.

But I see 80s crap like Allegros, Cortinas, Datsuns as classics because when you see them now they bring back very old memories and they are also fully restored and looking very smart.

I agree but the Supra is clearly a very competent car. Maybe it's competition pedigree?
