I've got one - it's an 'F' with a 650 Fiat 126 engine dropped into it.

What do you want to know? The basics are:

They rust like buggery if you aren't careful in the UK, and that's the expensive bit. On the F you can just lift the rubber mats up to check the floor.

The biggest difference between and F and an L are bumpers and the dash, plus reclining seats on the L. I personally prefer the painted F dash with its one dial. No petrol gauge but you get a warning light! The R has a similar dash to the F and a de tuned 600cc lump.

The original 499cc engine and crash box are just about ok on A and B roads without hills if you maintain maximum attack at all times. The 126 engine makes things much calmer and ours will do 70 with valve bounce being the limiting factor.

Everything is available for it, much as for say an MG, but at a higher price!

They are fun for small journeys, fine for two people, and most ladies look cute driving one. You'll get nothing but thumbs up from onlookers.

Price wise you are looking at circa £7k for a nice clean one with everything actually working and over £10k for something a bit special. Nice looking ones occasionally appear closer to £5k and may be a bargain or may have simply had a quick once over. That's the area to tread carefully in. Less than that and it will probably be rough.

Hope this helps :-)
