Ok I'm half lucky, one of my classics is pre 73 tax free, but the other is not.

With the new system, which I read can be done monthly. Does this mean its possible for us summer use only classic drivers could have just 5 months tax bought May to sept.

And maybe even buy the odd month here and there for a few nice crisp weekend drives in January?

As far as I know, the only way to achieve what you want would be to buy a six-month or twelve-month license, then send it back for a refund once you've used what you want. If you're doing that, I'd go for a twelve-month if cashflow isn't an issue, so you don't pay the six-month premium which doesn't factor in the refund calculation.

I don't think the new regulations have altered the period you can tax a car for, only the way that you can pay for it.

If you're paying monthly then there's no possible way to apply for a refund, since only full months can be refunded.

Simply cancelling the Direct Debit would mean that VED on the vehicle would cease to exist when the last monthly payment expired.

What I meant was that if the OP wants to tax it for January, he could do so by taxing it for twelve months, then applying for a refund before the end of January. You can't buy anything other than a six or twelve-month license.

I wasn't thinking of the paying monthly option, I haven't looked into the details of that. If simply cancelling the DD has the same effect, then all good, albeit at a 5% premium for the monthly payment option.

If you cancel your direct debit or it bounces, does this automatically SORN your vehicle? or do you need to notify DVLA as well.
The computer will automatically note the lack of payment, but do you still owe the money.
As an example, the notorious Sky finally stopped demanding money from me in February, after I cancelled in July.
Possibly I'm looking at the difference between a voluntary and an involuntary stoppage of payments.

My understanding is that if you have a 12 month licence and then SORN it after one month (less a day)they will charge you one month at the 6-month rate and then refund the balance, so no advantage in buying a 12 month licence.

Is that another new thing with these recent changes? Last time I did (2012) this I got 11/12ths of what I had paid for the twelve months as my refund - paid £220, got a refund of £201.66. The notes at the time spelled out that if you chopped in part of a six month disc, you wouldn't get any of the 'surcharge' that makes six months more expensive than half of a twelve month.
