Hi all

I am having trouble getting quotes for a Datsun 260z 2+2 (1976)

I am a member of the Z club, have a had a license for about 8 months (20 YRS OLD) and I currently drive and am insured on a 2003 Saab 9-3 2.0T cabrio (220HP) I pay £350 annually for fully comp.

The cheapest quote I have managed to get was £4500, that was a few months ago and since then it has been near impossible to even get a company to quote me. I know most companies have a age limit (25) and if they don't they would only insure me on a one litre or there abouts.

Does anyone have any advice of how to get a good quote?

Thanks

I would think that would probably come under classic insurance which would probably have quite a low annual mileage allowance, but again a lot of companies wont give classic insurance to under 25s. I actually amazed at the price of the Saab insurance taking in your age and time youve held a licence, my son at 24 and held his full licence since 17 pays considerably more than that for an Audi A3 diesel.

When I try to get quotes I say under 3000 miles a year

I was amazed as well, considering I pay £1000 fully comp for a Fiat 500 1.2 (69HP).

I think i got very lucky, Ill find out when it comes to renewal

I would be vary wary about posting things like that. Not declaring such a major modification is asking for a lot of trouble. Potentially criminal offences, and a good chance your insurance company wouldn't pay out in the event of an accident.

Can't get insured for the 260 and not legally insured for the Saab. Not great.

So, you are not insured to drive the Saab also? I would get those modifications declared ASAP.

For the Datsun, are you simply trying comparison websites?? Try some of the specialist insurers like Adrian Flux, Performance Direct. Also, phone them up - it can be a case of 'computer says no', but speaking to a human might give you more options.

Good luck....

When you discuss with the insurers the milage I found tat there is a balance between not enough miles so limited experience driving and then high milage 5000 miles appears to a cut off point, also where the car is stored. As noted above try some of the comparison sites and adjust the milage etc to get the best balance.

rolleyes

Anyway, the Datsun. You'd be a muppet to have it on anything but a classic policy. Your biggest problem there is going to be your age - few classic insurers like under 25s. Talk to the club, spend plenty of time on the phone, and see if you can find somebody who will. Don't waste time with online quotes, with comparison sites.

Do you have any sort of idea of how it could effect the insurance? I could reverse the remap very easily.

I tried many of the specialist classic car insurers, Adrian flux, Footman james (who want a year on a licence). I tried to many others to mention as-well.

The funny thing is £4500 quote actually came from a price comparison website.

Thanks for the help

If your insurer wouldn't have covered you with the remap, then they would be well within their rights to say that you were only insured by having lied on the proposal, and withdraw cover. They would have to cover any third-party claims, but could then pass those on to you. You'd have to declare having been refused insurance.

If they would have covered you, but at an increased premium, then they would be well within their rights to either invoice you for that premium or withhold it from any payout you'd otherwise receive.

I don't want to sound like a boring old fart (even though I am)but I declare everything to my insurers even if it ups my premiums, there's absolutly no point having insurance that is not valid because you have lied.

Insurance companies will look to get out of paying a big claim and you're playing right into their hands.

Something not right here, £350 for fully comp for a 20yr old new driver with a high risk powerful SAAB but £4500 to insure a relatively low risk 70s sports cruiser on a limited mileage policy???

I know, That was 2-3 months ago as-well; when I had even less on a licence. I thought it may be to do with the safety ratings that Saab's have, also they are possibly not seen as "boy racer" type of cars compared to a equivalent BMW 320i.
The car is not my name which maybe also be a reason, me as a added driver although I am the only one who drives it and pays maintenance costs. The excess is also about £1000. Even with all aspects considered I have had a incredibly good deal, I almost jumped of my chair when the insurance company told me how much for me fully comp.

In regards to the Datsun, I just received a quote today of £3950 which is slightly better. I might wait till I have my one years no claims in March and also when I turn 21, That could bring it down.

One more thing I forgot to Mention; My employment is down as a Mechanic...which means that drive between 5-10 different cars everyday. This could have brought down the price, not sure how it works

Well, good luck finding affordable insurance. Post a pic of your 260ZED if you've already bought one.

And don't tell anyone you're running a power chip in the SAAB.

Maybe it's not so wise to discuss such things on a public forum...http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/imgs/3.gif

Google "Fronting".

Really? You regard wasting £350 on a useless policy as a good deal? I've got a bridge for sale, y'know. Bargain.

Still, I'm sure that putting your full name and rough location in your PH profile will help your insurers no end in tracking down and cancelling the policy.
