Alfasud Ti - shockingly good
VW Golf Gti Mk 2 8valve -a car for every purpose
205GTI - huge fun
Uno Turbo- huger fun (no grip at all but acceleration made 205 feel like a diesel)
328GTB - one of the last Ferraris which wasn't targetted at footballers
911- red with a whale tail natch
BMW 323i- when BMWs weren't so mainstream
Citroen Visa - the one with the 650 twin- somebody's got to love 'em
Audi 100- because far more influential than the Quattro turned out to be

I agree with the 100 being influential but not more influential than the Quattro – four-wheel drive is now fairly normal on high performance cars, not so beforehand. All the C3 100 bought to the game was a lower Cd, but the Sierra was just as slippy IIRC.

Not that I don't like 100s, I think they're cool.

Hmm- not so sure; it was enormously influential for a time when even unlikely stuff like Mondeos and Cavaliers could be had in 4x4 spec . Nobody bought them . Audi and supercars like Gallardos apart, is it really so widespread? Focus RS and most of the mega hatches seem comfy with huge power and 2 wd

If it had been 60s cars the the Ro80 would be near the top of my list - not because of wankel power but absolutely everything else

It's an interesting point. Nevertheless I'd still argue that the Quattro is more generally recognised as a classic than the 100. It certainly true that the 100 was designed from the ground up as game changer, whereas the Quattro was cobbled together from odds and ends.

Well of course Jensen might choose to disagree, but they don't count because they're not German.

I had a alfasud cloverleaf when I was 17 (1995), I loved the car it just wasn't tough enough for my teenage driving style

Opel Manta GTE
Wasn't the batmobile a 70s car they just forgotten to stop selling.
Quite a hoot though and fits with being in a classic car forum. We used to have one as a pool car where I worked, it had a phone in it so occasionally I had to drive it when the people I was supporting that day wanted to be able to contact me.

No, they don't count because:

a. they didn't exactly set a trend for four-wheel drive,

and

b. the FF is a car of the 1960's.

Nothing to do with being German.

Volvo 262 (I think they just scraped in to the 1980s) or a 240 GLT estate
RS200
Sunbeam Lotus
Lotus Esprit (my poster car as a youngster)
Audi quattro ur
Reliant Scimitar (Princess Anne had one, you know)
Mini
Lamborghini Countach (just because I remember pulling up beside one and being amazed at the width of the rear tyres. These days I suspect even most 'shopping' cars have wider wheels)
BMW E30 M3
Oh and a Saab Turbo (just because my then neighbour had one and she was the hotest woman in the street!)

BMW E34 M5 - 4 door saloon with no equal
Porsche 928 S / S2 or S4 - arguably better than the 911 & 944 of their day
E34s are 90s not 80s iirc. Perhaps you mean an E28 M5
Nope smile The E34 M5 came out in Sep.'88
I bow to your greater knowledge.....don't think I've seen one that early though, could you buy a uk one in 88/89?

The early e34s came out for 88/89, with turbine wheels and a 3.5 straight six producing 315 bhp if my memory serves me correctly.
I drove one a little while ago and was surprised by the lack of torque. A good excuse to put a few revs on and enjoy the fantastic soundtracksmile

In no particular order:

Maserati Khamsin: Ferraris and Lamborghinis leave me cold. A classic Maserati on the other hand...

Rolls-Royce Camargue. No car makes you feel so important to travel in; they have a unique feel. I love the crazy styling. I prefer the extra chrome under the windows on earlier cars, but the later Silver Spirit suspension cars are better - and from the '80s! The Silver Shadow II is also a long held love of mine, but the Camargue is one of my favourite cars of all.

Jaguar XJ40. As a Sovereign, Daimler or a V12 these are wonderful, hugely underrated cars. They're so overlooked, Classic and Sportscar magazine didn't fully include them in their XJ retrospective recently.

I do like an old Merc, so I include a 500SE. I'm not greedy, so I'll leave the 560SEL to someone else! It has to have velour though.

Peugeot 604. Earlier the better.

Jaguar XJ-S Lynx Eventer. In fact any pre facelift XJ-S would probably do.

Aston Martin Lagonda, but before they ruined it with the later restyles!

BMW E28. It is such a handsome car. There are several interesting models; the 525e, 528i 535i (not the M535i though - I don't like the bodykit) - or of course the M5.

Rover 3500: before the facelift please!

My whimsy currently extends to a Mk2 Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia. Why not?

Brilliant list!! But Lagonda, V12 XJ40 and SD1 in the same stable? You'll be spending more in AA Homestart membership than fuel....biggrinbiggrin

As an aside my lift share to school in the late 70's included a V6 604 - most comfortable car I've ever been in.
