Not a bad list, but what about the SAAB 99 Turbo 2 door? There were but 1000 of these in RHD : 400 black and 600 red. I was lucky enough to own a black one for a few years. It's still on the DVLA list but on a SORN. It was a quick old car and a hoot on wet roundabouts. I was Hannu Mikkola in wintertime! It was pretty reliable too, apart from a failed fuel pump relay and a worn out original turbo which I replaced with a later one from a 900 turbo which I was given!

Great car! Given it came out in the late 70's and the relatively low numbers, it was off the radar in the 80's due to that and the hot hatch explosion.

And Saab had developed the 99 into the 900 in 1979........and as posted by quite a few of us already, the 900 Turbo was definitely a car of the 80's.

No, they don't count because:

a. they didn't exactly set a trend for four-wheel drive,

and

b. the FF is a car of the 1960's.

Nothing to do with being German.

Well I never. I'd never heard of that conversion until opening those links. I wonder how many they made.

I don't think one could reasonably argue that the Quattro was a reaction to the Monza FF though. I'd be surprised if it was on Dr Piech's radar at all.

Quite a good road test of it in Motor. Better than quattro in many respects as it had 70/30 torque split front to rear to give rear wheel drive handling characteristics and viscous couplings both central and rear diffs plus Maxaret electronic antilock braking all of which was very advanced for 1980.

Have an 80's collection growing at the moment. Skyline R32 GTR, Alpina 635Csi. Alpine GTA V6 Turbo, Renault 5 Gordini Turbo. Think the most iconic cars are Quattro, E30 M3, 911 Turbo, Sierra Cosworth to name a few

What a great list. I would put E30 M3 and Uno Turbo in place of Misti and Astra although I would not say no in the slightest to those two.

A 289 only looks and sounds better when in pukka FiA spec., otherwise I'd take a proper 427 everytime.
