Just spent the day cleaning and polishing my recently acquired 928

Speaking from experience I would also think about the running costs associated with running whatever car you choose OP. I sounds like a 'good' 928 might be out of reach but a bad one will drain your finances like little else!

I quite like the idea of a 914 (or 916 if you find one?) - relatively rare and a bit different and I think they look good too.

Good luck finding something that fits the bill.
What a lovely looking car in a great colour Pete! Biased on the colour though! What more info can you spill... History etc

Cheers Mike - quite a car collection you have, love the Mustang!

The 928 is a 1988 S4 auto with just over 110k on it with loads of history (stamped service book, bills & receipts and MOT's going back to the mid 90's). I got it just before Christmas but it's been away at 928 spares having some work done hence the comments to the OP are the potential costs! Hoping the weather will improve so I can get out in it!

The 928 keeps my TVR Tamora company!

Just buy a £10K Boxster S. Far nicer to drive than most if not all old 911s and it won't be full of rust or have 50s ergonomics.
I have considered that, but they're ubiquitous and I'm looking for something that bit different.
An old 911 will be different. Unless if has been professionally restored, in which case it will be up for £50K, it will be riddled with rust and need loads spent on it without ever getting close to being as good a drive as a Boxster S. What's your budget?

I know it's not the comparison you made but I was given a 987 Boxster when my 944 S2 went in for some work and I couldn't swap it back fast enough. Boxster did nothing at all for me in performance or handling and was simply a flimsy gee-gaw in comparison with the utterly solid, proper engineering of a 944.

Oli.
Are you serious? Whatever you do, don't try a Cayman S...

I'd agree. the 944 S2 and 968s I test drove felt utterly "solid", my 996 less so.

Although the 996 does still have "clicky" buttons and indicators that are lovely after the "soft touch" controls of modern cars.

Don't believe the internet hype at first read - the 3.4 996 has a very low IMS failure rate (~1%) and doesn't score its bores like the later 996.

I don't know why you even bothered to post that tbh. Nicer to drive? Jesus. That is the whole point, sonething which has obviously gone over your head smile

I'm pleased you agree.

Still waiting to hear the op's budget.

There are probably plenty of cars better than a Boxster ... doesn't mean I want one though!

You have to *drive* an old car - you don't have to *drive* a modern Porsche ...

Up to 10K.... unless my wife finds out, in which case it becomes about 5K
