You used to need a current MOT before you could transfer - but 1956 cars are exempt, not sure how that works now.
Pre-60 cars still need a current MOT for plate transfers. Anything later just needs to have had current tax within the previous year.

I think I'll take the word of the motor insurance database and DVLA over a tyre firm, ta.
Probably wise. I don't think Blackcircles could fit a set of VW Golf tyres onto a Jaguar sports car smile
I thought they all used the same database. I did some work years ago for the company that ran the database. They didn't have my reg right. Of all things they thought my XJ6 was a Vitara (sp) furious I'd only owned it for 10+ years at the time.

Now then,EDP672 is no longer in use, lost, gone or what ever? It was on my mums E93A Ford Anglia and that must have dissolved years ago,all I have is a 60 year old photo.
Is there any way I can get that number from DVLA to use on my Mercedes??
Nope. They don't reissue "dead" numbers, just in case that Anglebox is ever found and restored.

Old Merc. If you can't have EDP672, Have you considered trying to find something very similar? how about EDP 672A? (this plate appears never to have been previously issued). Little known fact.....On the dvla registrations official website if you cannot search or find the plate you are looking to buy there is a telephone number to ring (0300 123 0883) and an option for you to request them to enter your choice of plate into one of their future online auctions. See pasted bit from the q&a section below....

"What if I am unable to find the registration number I want?If you are unable to find your perfect registration or have a specific request please contact us ( see How do I contact DVLA? ) and we will try our best to help you with your search. Registrations that are not currently available but have never been previously issued to vehicles could be offered for sale at future auctions."

I did this a few years back when looking for a something similar to my dateless 3-number, 3-letter plate, no one else bid in the online auction (unsurprisingly!) and for approx. 250 quid I've ended up with this (almost) matching pair.

I did the same.

There was a 3-letter 3 number combination I wanted, called DVLA SOM and they said "No, it's part of a series that has been issued before" (The plate itself may not have been issued, but we know that series was used, and it is possible it was issued and scrapped before records were retained - 1980s? )

However - they also looked at whether the 3-number 3-letter series had been issued, and it hadn't. So 12 months later, I am the only bidder and get the plate I wanted.

Full credit to the DVLA SOM Team - it worked well for me.
