This was the Carrera 4 today for comments
If it were me I'd go for an "S" with the extra power, and not the 4wd which adds weight and complexity. Is the car going to be a daily (in which case the 997 or 996 is more than capable) or a special for weekends / summer in which case you should try for something a bit more charismatic like the 993/964 although you'll have to double your budget to get a decent 993.

As someone has mentioned the 996 engine problems appear more serious than is the case because of internet folklore - think of that before jumping into a 5 year old out of warranty M3....
no it wouldnt be a daily driver. 2wd rather than 4wd would be preferred as well if honest.

Wow. I can remember 5 years ago you could get a 964 for £12k. £16k got you one that looked immaculte from the ad.

Have you considered a Lotus? You could have the pick of the bunch of Esprits.

No tbh i like esprits but wouldn't want one. Work colleague has one and although it looks funky hes had about 6k worth of chassis repairs done sorting the rot and then engine issues.

To the OP- before pulling the trigger on any purchase I'd recommend taking a 993 for a test drive.....
a superb solid feel to the handling- great looks- as a total package few cars match a 993 for similar money.

I would hope to test drive a few model variants if allowed. Its a big spend potentially. My friend is recommending i test drive an M3 CSL as well as he's owned one or two in addition to his current 911 gt2

comments on the above ? Assume an inspection would be looking at bodywork and possible corrosion issues as well as mechanical condition

^^^^^ Very strong on price and the yellow car is pretending to be something its not. I've also read mixed reports on Hexagon where some buyers have been disappointed by the standard of their cars and aftercare which is somewhat unexpected when you are clearly paying top money. In which case you'd be advised to have a PPI.

Their other 'classic' showroom is something else but I suspect has a client base where the price is not a factor.

Consider also a specialist dealer who only deal in Porsche who know the marque and have a solid on-site warranty - 911v, Paragon, JZM, Strasse etc

The 993 and 964 shape are starting to give me a warm fuzzy feeling looking through the adverts. Nice shape and styling

I've decided for the time being to concentrate on finding a 964 or 993 locally and see if i can get a test drive. Loving the shape and altho scarce there are cars out there.
Any recommendations to cars or dealers to try appreciated

you made a good point tbh. I have a daily 4x4 i have never washed that is as muddy insude as out yet i wash and clean the Sunbeam every time i drive it and often take the wheels off to clean inside the arches. I've had it on ramps to clean underseal runs out of the chassis after i used bilt hamber a bit too much in warm weather ?

The ownership aspect and pride of ownership is a big part of something like this. The 911 today was very much something i could easily live with on a limited mileage toy basis and keep spotless. I have a ducati 748 that is concours too and often gets cleaned more than ridden lol
You need to see a good therapist laugh

I would go for a 996 Turbo. Its a bit of a supercar bargain, IMHO. Prices are gradually going North for low mileage manuals with good specs. Its also unlikely to be a car you'll run out of talent with too quickly, excellent parts availability, and 2 year service intervals on 2004 chassis onwards cars. Its also very unlikely to need future welding work unlike 964 and 993 generation cars. I think the styling has kept the prices in check until recently, but by Christ they drive well.
