Hi All

Probably a bit like predicting the next 6 lotto numbers, but what do you all think are the next batch of cars to become value-rising classics?

Lets say cars built mid eighties to late 90s...Old, but not yet old enough to be proper classics.

As a start I believe the Peugeot 205GTI will be (nothing to do with me owning one) and is partly there..

But what else - and how on earth do you preempt an appreciating classic of the future...? The BMW M3 CSL is going bonkers, as are other cars, but other exciting ones not so much....

Seeing as I'm picking up a mint '83 example in a couple of weeks, I hope the Golf GTI Mk1 will rise even more over the next few years...

Eighties stuff is already on the rise - Golf Mk1's/MkII's, etc

I think you need to look at mid-90's stuff and newer to catch it on the bottom of the appreciation curve.

Stuff that was good when it came out and is still good to drive now is the formula, along with limited availability of good examples and/or general rarity.

I'd be looking medium-long term at

Subaru Impreza Turbo
E46 M3
Peugeot 306 GTI-6 / Rallye
Porsche Boxsters can't stay that cheap for long, but the potential pitfall is there's loads of them about, for now - they used to say that about a lot of expensive stuff....

e36 bmws, corrados, clio sports, focus rs, top spec mk3 golf.. honest, mk2 mr2. Basically as above, anything from the 90s that was remotely interesting

I don't think a Mondeo will ever make more than the odd enthusiast paying for a smart one, the Escort Cosworth is already there, £20k for a N reg - often much more..

Early Lotus Elans, and Elan plus 2.

They are undervalued still compared with comparable counterparts considering the heritage and marque history at the time.

Mondeo has no 'halo' model like a Cosworth or RS to make it desirable. No petrol-head ever dreamed of owning a Mondeo at 12 years old like they did a Mexico/RS Turbo/Twin Cam/Cosworth

Late 90's onwards Fords, with the possible exception of Focus RS models, aren't really that classic fodder, IMO.

All Cosworths are already there for decent stuff.

history teaches us that whats worthless today stays worthless in a upward interest rate cycle. I wouldn't touch any of it.
mass produced, low valued cars on the periphery of peoples interest won't be a sensible 'investment' IMHO.
As sure as the tide goes out.....interest rates will go back up. Problem now is how many people have got used to benign interest rates, cheap money and leveraged lifestyles (not 7 years after the last bout of 'living beyond ones means').
Some of us have grey hairs on here and tell you about the misery of the mid 70's, late 80's and early nineties.
....but if you must spend I would look at unmolested, unmarked, low mileage, well serviced hot hatches of the 90's.

I always think anything with a rally or motorsport heritage will work - thats why Mk1 Escorts are so desirable, and why the 205GTI had the edge over the Mk1 and Mk2 Golf GTI - and it was more fun...Plus now has entry into historic rallying I think...

Any thoughts on the Ford Puma? Most are rusting away. Not my cup of tea but they were well regarded by many.

I saw an ad for a pretty ropey looking MK II Escort the other day. Nothing special it was either a Popular or L model, and the sort of motor that 25 years ago would have made a council estate look shabby. It was something like 3k

Maybe I should buy a brand new low spec Focus and shove it in a lock up for three or four decades....

As I founded / run a Puma forum & club I see lots that are very well cared for and loved. I also see lots of utter dogs which are dragging prices down.

Limited run ones like the Millennium and the bit more powerful Racing will become collectable if in good condition and their values will rise. Still bumbling about on the bottom at the moment.

Puma is a good shout

MkII Escorts are popular because they're RWD, simple to work on, etc.

I can't see a Focus having the same appeal in 30 years time smile

Some of the obscure jap stuff will appreciate, Celica GT Four perhaps being one such example, along with early "sorted" (meaning clean and standard) Imprezas. Anything that has some rarity value attached to it. Even stuff like Calibra Turbo's and the more potent end of the Vauxhall model range, Cavalier Turbos etc. There will come a day when the mass produced stuff becomes expensive based upon limited numbers being left. We're seeing that is boggo Escorts now.

I'm not sure what kind of figures 4x4 Sierras and the 2.8's are commanding, along with clean and tidy Granada Scorpios. Perhaps a few examples of appreciating vehicles which might or might not be worth looking for now, tidying up and sitting on, provided you have the space to do so of course smile

I'm not a fan of the Mondeo but wasn't there a 2.0Si 4x4 that came with an RS bodykit - I seem to remember a mates' Dad having a yellow one. I think it may have been a predecessor for the Mondeo ST200.

Jaguar XKR both in convertible and hard top versions. To me this was the sucessor to the E-Type. Currently available for beer money but give it another ten years and these will sky rocket. Buy a good one now and store it away.
