Mk2 Golf GTi - opinions on these 2??

Funny how times change. I loved my Mk 1 GTi (it was a Jetta called the GLi though) but I absolutely hated my Mk2 16 valve. I cannot see why, in a road-going version of a car, fifth gear is a direct top, not overdrive. Believe me, driving from Leicester to Gleneagles was a nightmare, the engine turning at 4000 rpm for 80 mph. I only kept it a short while from new and sold it to a friend who kept it as a fun car. That it was, but I can remember even to this day the relentless buzz of the engine above 70 mph. Very tiring.
Strange, I had a GTI 16v Mk Jetta, I loved it to bits, it would sit happily on the motorway at 70-80 mph, with plenty in reserve to pass when needed, I didn't find it loud or undergeared at all (maybe more sound deadening on the saloon?). I would love to have the time/space to have that car back, but its long gone now.I had an Oak Green GTI earlier this year, nice car, but not a keeper, but only cheap and local, so went for gold.
Make sure the heating system works as it should. I found the foam had perished in the system which meant I had cold air all the time, instead of hot as requested. Not thermostat or bypass of piping valves, just the physical flaps had turned to dust. I got this sorted easily but was convinced it was thermostat or valves for ages.
The foam in air vents is a clue though!
