It was scrap to be fair - a chassis and a bulkhead plus a mark X engine and lots of rust.
Even so!
I bought a 1963 E type convertible for £95 and sold it a couple of months later for £150 and congratulated myself on such a profitable deal. (about 1976/76).Even so!
It was in the latter stages of death by rust.
30 years ago, a guy I knew told me a story about a 2.8 XJ6 he'd bought in the mid seventies with a very good body but borked engine. No good XJ6 units anywhere so he bought a rotten 3.8 Roadster for 50 quid, transplanted the good 3.8 into the XJ and chopped the E up with an axe before chucking the remains into a big skip. "I was building an extension so put the E Type in first and covered it with rubble' he laughed.
He did say it was almost falling in half with rot though.

thankfully not everyone was quite so disrespectful to one of the greatest motor cars ever built!! judging by the amount still extant, they were never regarded in quite the throw away style that one may believe. Yes they rotted like hell but collectors were avidly tucking away early 3.8s by the late 60s. I bought my own 62 3.8 FHC from the second owner who bought it when it was 3 years old. He couldn't bring himself to scrap it so just put it in a shed until I was lucky enough to prise it free a few years ago
My local scrappy used to have 3 E-types and said that he couldn't give them away at the time (early eighties I think) despite being low mileage and pretty good condition. He ended up scrapping 2 and swapping the last one for some kind of Alfa. I like to remind him of this occasionally, usually when I'm being screwed over on weigh in prices.
An old boy around the corner from me has a pristine 2 tone blue S1 XJ6 hidden away in his shed. Mad old boy who runs around in a Hillman Imp as his daily driver. I spoke to him once about the cars and he had some plan to twin turbo charge the jag to give it a bit more 'oomph'. Crackers. Seeing that car regularly and popping my head in here is dangerous!
