The C matic was an unusual idea that worked quite well, although it suffered from a low top gear.
5 speed manuals feel substantially quicker, and would be my choice if I was in the market.

No lower than top in the 3-spd auto, though.

The weight of the clutch and the clunkiness of the gear change do feel very at odds with the fingertip lightness of everything else, though.

The transmission options really are the CXs weak spot (rot aside, of course). A decent modern multi-speed autobox would be on the spec sheet for my ultimate CX.

I wonder if XM engine/gearbox would fit? Even if the V6 is too bulky the inline 4s would be a significant improvement over the CX's engines.

Late answer I know but I love CXs and had to reply here.
I have owned three examples - a 1982 S1 2.0 Reflex 5sp, a 1985 S1 GTi 2.5 5 sp and a 1983 2400 IE Pallas auto.
The Reflex was nice but not too fast so I got the GTi. Which was a great car to drive but I missed the chrome, the GTi had black window surrounds and mirrors etc. It also had not the "eye" speedo but a conventional speedo. That annoyed me as well, if you have CX then have one with all the quirky bits please.
The last one was the best. The 2.4 injected engine is great, as is the 3 speed auto. It also had the rare armrest in the middle, and leather seats. This all meant it was a fantastic, comfortable, pretty fast machine. OK - it did 4K rpm on the motorway but apart from that, just great. I sold it because the rust had gone too far. Still missed, if I knew where it is I would buy it back and restore.

If anyone is interested I have a customer in Croydon who has a white '88 CX DGT turbo2 he wants to sell. ( 168nhp diesel I think ) It has been parked up for a few years under a shelter, engine and gearbox issues and the rear screen is broken. But its all there, one owner ( him ) since '89 ( a Citroen director had it for 6 months from new )Anyone interested contact me on 07801 495568, I am sure £500 would probobly buy it, but you need big cahoonas to take it on! Hovever, it is one cool ****ing car.

Citroen never mated the Turbo with an autobox.
We did!
Put an autobox into a Turbo 2. Drove like a turbine. Not fast by todays standards, but smooth. Was my fourth CX; drove all the way across spain in a ser 2 auto. Only overheated twice-dodgy electrical connnection made the fan stay off, I discovered later.
And once, showing off the suspension, it failed to rise again! Dodgy switch underneath.
But I'd love a Prestige Auto. 2.
And, if lottery win, convert it to electric?

Back in about 1980 a friend's parents had the big estate, Safari. I think it was dark red in colour
i remember it looked huge and the dash was really futuristic
I think it had a button on the steering column for the horn?
It was cool as it had electric windows, but only the fronts from memory

I love CXs and have owned a few.

Some when you could buy a new one, some when they were 20/30 years old, so I have tried to bear that in mind when comparing.

The late S1 2.0. single carb 5 sp. manual is by far the pick of the bunch now. It is not a slow car. Just before the plastic bumpers. They are divine as a modern classic.

My next out of all is the 2.4 injected auto. Just a great combination of speed and reliability.

76 2.3 Pallas Saloon Dryard Green, Brown Leather A/C. Always thought the push-rod engine a bit rough and thirsty. Great color.
79 D non turbo diesel. Metallic gray saloon. Sounded like a tractor, economical but as much fum as eating cabbage from cold.
78 2.4 C-matic only 3 gears and juicy, brown seats three rows. Died of rust.
88 DTR Turbo 2 Safari white estate - engine block problems, modern dash, reasonably quick.
91 DTR turbo Went rusty quite quickly Silver. Great car until it dissolved and the lines broke.
82 2.4 Turbo saloon, light metallic blue.Thirsty. Expensive metric tyres. Unreliable fuel injection( well, it was 30 years old by then).
83 2.4i auto petrol Superb but a bit juicy. Dirven to death from new. Never gave any trouble, a superb car.
82 2.0 carb suitcase engine 5 speed saloon-Silver with grey twil seats. My favorite;. 110 bhp lightweight engine, excellent cruiser up to 90 mph. So comfortable!! Economical too.

I adore the CX, still look great today. If I ever come into money I'll be looking to source a mint GTI Turbo 2 for my collection

My ex boss the late Geoff Matthews who was an exterior design boss at Citreon for a while drove me as a sandwich student to Norfolk from Leamington Spa in a Turbo 2 lighting his pipe whilst steering with his knees during an overtake. On the way to the supplier, we also drove through a village in Fens, pretty sure the one I now live in, and saw a kid on a mountain bike (it was 1989 so this was relevant). Whereupon I opined/droned about transport, marketing and lifestyle etc that of you can sell MTBs in the Fens then etc etc desperately trying to impress him. He later worked on the Connaught. Even had a film made about him by his son, as he died a troubled man, quite interesting if you can find it. Always very pleasant man and competent at work.

I miss my CX. I had it back in the late 80s, early 90s. A 2400ie Pallas Auto.

It was my main car plus it took me on holidays around the UK and across the continent.

The front seats were like the ones LaForge and Data sat in whilst helming the Enterprise.

Rust got it in the end.

I also had an ID19 and an XM.

My father had a 2.5 CX Safari diesel which he loved until it skidded off the road on ice and got written off.

He then bought one of the last imported 22TRS from Citroen in Slough which he had until he died in 1994. Think it was 'G' reg from memory.

Had it for a short while before (stupidly) selling it. Wonderfully smooth car which just flew. Never forget taking out the buyers on a test drive and flying down the A12 in it, fabulous car. smile
