I've been pipe dreaming about getting one with an unfavoured or knackered powertrain and handing it over to a local firm who'll do an electric conversion and bodywork and interior restoration. I might even get such a plan past my wife, but I expect I'd be hunted down and killed by some purists.

As a Jaguar nut I'd say go for it, an XJ is suppose to waft and the only thing likely to be waftier than a well sorted V12 is an electric motor. The XK engine is not the defining feature of a series XJ, with the possible exception of some of the supercharged XJRs I don't think the engine is a defining feature of any XJ. An electric conversion is my X300 would be interesting too.

I've been meaning to add to this, fashionably late to the party.

I have owned and used as daily transport 3 P6 Rovers, early 200TC, later V8 auto and V8S nanual, a Jaguar XJ6 X300 and a Daimler Sovereign S1 2.8 auto and a RR Silver Shadow.

Without a doubt the vest of the bunch by a very comfy coyntry mile was the Daimler. I loved driving it. Just a shame it fell to bits.

I just drove my 1980 Bentley T2 loaded to the gunnels from London to Durham and back over the last two days to deposit my son plus kitchen sink at University which was a round trip of about 550 miles. Just perfect for the job. Happy to cruise in great comfort at 80 mph and 14 mpg and did not miss a beat. No other British saloon of the day would do that job as well except for possibly an XJ12 or Double-Six but then you would need a van to follow you with the kitchen sink.

What a lovely Bentley. Always liked the T1 and T2.

Don't be too hard on your Daimler!

I bought a 1973 Rover P6 in 1979 and it had more structural rust issues than the 1970 Fiat it replaced. frown

I replaced the Rover with a MK2 Granada in 1981 and was amazed at how much better it handled - maybe a MK1 Granada would work, assuming you could find one. They did handle really well on the banger racing tracks!

A friend also with a P5B Coupe and a Saloon has just sent me a photo of this month's (I think) Practical Classics which reckons that P5B Coupe prices are on the rise and now rivalling Mk2 Jags and hitting £30K and beyond.

So Nij, if you want to get back into P5 ownership you'd best be quick.

Hope all is good with you?

All's well here mate, hope you're well. The trouble is I've got other things on my radar which I want just as much as another P5B Coupe...!

Haven't we all! LOL

But after owning the P5B for 20 years and the Chim for 15 it's hard to let go.

The list I'd like is very long but ...
