Spotted this in the Algarve last week. I tried to take a picture from the other side, but a rather big Alsatian jumped out and chased me away. Luckily it was on a chain, but it was rather long! Anyway, not sure what it is, but I love it. Maybe Citroen judging by the wheels?... Any ideas?

Some cars don't deserve saving and that Citroen is one of them.
They were crap when new and only wine fuelled eyes would see them as worth saving...
Well that's your opinion – I happen to think it's pretty cool, certainly a lot cooler that countless Stags MGBs TRs and whatever, the usual 'classic' fodder. They were crap when new and only wine fuelled eyes would see them as worth saving...
I didn't even know they'd made a GTi 4x4.
The Citroen BX does not fit in either of those descriptions and neither do Toyota Starlet's, Austin Allegro's, Nissan Micra's etc.
A Classic is usually one that was desirable/aspirational when new. A Hero would have been fast/great handling/new technology/you get the idea when new.
None of the above were any of those things. They were steel waiting to be recycled into something worthwhile.

So by that token a Mark 1 Escort is not a classic. Good luck with that. I actually quite liked the BX when it was a current model. It was a proper Citroen, quite distinctive. Don't know why it is any less deserving and that particular GTi 4x4 is very interesting, to me.
I owned a Mk1 Escort 1300GT in the 1970's and no, they are not a Classic or Hero. A genuine Mexico would be.Maybe we need a forum called 'Car's My Parents Owned When I was a Kid' or 'Car's I Remember Fondly from my Youth'
They are not Classics, just cars you have a connection with.

A classic is whatever you want it to be. I look at some 'classics' with massive price tags and think, really....?
My first car was an Austin 1300. It'll never be a classic in the PH sense but I love seeing them, rarely, at car shows. A classic to me, is something which sums up the age when it was built (and in the 1300's case, it was mostly crap bodywork and crap engines) but those in themselves bring back memories to me of my early motoring days.

A Classic is not 'whatever you want it to be'. It is a car that by consensus of opinion is a Classic. A car that an individual considers a classic is just a car that imbues positive emotions in that person. If it is not a classic by consensus it is just 'another tin box'.My first car was an Austin 1300. It'll never be a classic in the PH sense but I love seeing them, rarely, at car shows. I learned to drive in an Austin 1300 so it slightly positive memories for me but it is not a Classic. A mini is a Classic due to the revolutionary design.
I am sorry to spoil some people's image of a Classic. A car that stirs positive emotions in an individual is to them important, but it has to be liked then and now by the majority to be a true Classic.

I would disagree with that and also say a lot of irony exists in your opinion for anything deemed a classic with a British Leyland stamp on it. They were crap when new and only wine fuelled eyes would see them as worth saving...
