I know the (ex-) owner of that Fuego in the background.

Heading out to Shelsley Walsh yesterday in the 3.8. Coming home in 80 plus degrees with just two piddling quarter lights to try and get some warm air flowing about made the drive hard work!

Well yes- but you don’t get too much benefit from the rear ones when in the front and besides which they don’t open as wide as the front ones!

Keep it stiff

That is stunning - love the colour, colour-coded wires and the rear Coombs spats... cloud9

Having fun in my Bluebird Athenian taxi project. With 60 non-turbo diesel horses, you can only drift it in gravel or very slippery tarmac.

What are Coombe spats, may I ask?

Thank you for the compliment. It attracts a lot of similar comments with regards to the colour coded wire wheels.

Rich- Coombs or sports spats were seen in period on the Mk2’s (and Mk1s I believe) that raced at the time- obviously Coombs race prepared Mk2s are well known- I’m not sure if John Coombs actually developed the spat or not. Jaguar cars from the 50’s often had full or half rear wheel spats and most road going Mk2’s still sport the ‘fuller’ rear wheel spats. I can’t ever recall seeing a race prepared Mk2 with anything less than sports spats and some had no spats at all.
In my view the sports/ Coombs spats look far better.

I suppose I'd never given it much thought, so thanks. I always assume the Mk1 had full spats and the Mk2 none however I see now that I've been missing the fine details. So is this Mk2 wearing the Coombs spats or Jaguar's own small spats?

Rich, I’m not sure but they might be one and the same. I think sports spats were just referred to as Coombs spats because of the fact Coombs prepared cars were racing at the time. As an aside, that car appears to be running on after market wider tyres and has had a bit of a modern interior makeover which isn’t my thing at all!

Ah yes, I hadn't noticed that, rear head rests etc. Not my thing either, I just clipped a pic from Google images.

Do you not like roof aerials? I am sure they were around in the early '60s.

They were around in the 50's - my old (and long gone) Riley RME had one which I'd be surprised if not original fit - it was quite crusty in 1971 when I bought the car.

I was about to post exactly the same about my RME, a '54. Its aerial had an interior handle that could be rotated 90 degrees, turning the aerial flat against the roof.
