Modern alloys on classic cars: your take?
Discussion
I also think a lot has to do with psychology. When you see a car for the first few times, particularly one that really makes an impression on you, I think a mental imprint is made. You may have seen it in different colours but over a period but I think you subconsciously form an opinion that the original imprint is "right" even if you aren't really a fan of the car. Years later any major deviations to the original imprint tend to stand out mostly as "wrong" by default. As it applies to non-standard or aftermarket wheels often I have no problem with the wheels themselves but just not on that car!

The F has an unusual wheel bolt pattern shared with things like the Metro and even the Minor,s become rare and sought after in original condition.
so would TR6 wheels fit I wonder?
MGJohn will put you right, i think anything Montego will fit.

Maybe the originals are away being restored...
or maybe they're kept 'for best' and these are just for driving around on...
They're still fking horrible regardless, you could do much better for a 'temporary' set of wheels.

Ive got those 360 wheels on my Mondial, done by PO.
Its a bit of a stretch to go 2 gens ahead and they look better with 348 wheels or Superperformance's 16" QV copies, but not changing this year at least anyhoo. People change them on Mondials to avoid the metric TRX sizing, 18" give handier cruise on the motorway and better choice of tyres.
No excuse for that Dino though. Gold to add insult to injury.
Wonder if the owners stands back and hides in a bush watching the purists get apoplectic.

There was a nice early Mondial with 348 'Throwing Stars' on, which is the inverse of that Dino, they work very well. Its a bit of a stretch to go 2 gens ahead and they look better with 348 wheels or Superperformance's 16" QV copies, but not changing this year at least anyhoo.

Well that's not an early Mondial assuming it is the one your referring too. Fours gens, 8, QV, 3.2 then T.I agree the 348s throwing stars look good, I think that is because it was around the same time as the "T". Also the 355 starfish shown in the background also work. The 360s on mine are a two gens ahead which is too far but "borderline" rather than hateful so ill just live with them for now. This is an endless topic on Mondial forums and plenty of people have all the variants.

Some people don't like this wheel/car combination. Me, I think it's perfect - but I would, wouldn't I?
I'll call those as borderline, really lovely car.300bhp/ton said:

Proportion wise and styling wise, they are fine. Whether you like them or not is something else
Erm... isn't the bolded bit your opinion? And it's your opinion that the styling and proportion is "fine".So you're saying that in your opinion they are "fine", but whether he likes them or not "is something else".
I'm not sure I follow the logic.
PS - They look OTT, IMHO. They don't follow the lines of the car or complement the shape at all. But then, I rarely like oversized alloys on anything buy Japanese cars.
For everything there is normally a range, too big, too small or somewhere between. As a rule the things in-between usually work. You don't have to like them, but they are normally fine.
For example, 10" rims on those cars would look stupid, but work for a Mini, because a Mini is small and proportionally they fit.
Likewise, 20-22"+ will likely look stupid. But anything 14-18" will probably work, as it simply won't look OTT or out of place.
It may not be what you like or even what you expect due to pre-conceptions. But that is subtlety different.
And even if something looks stupid, it's still perfectly fine to like it, if it appeals personally too you.
As for the lines... don't get where you are coming from. Wheels are round, slightly larger ones are round too. The lines haven't changed.
I admit, I probably shouldn't have used the word styling. I wasn't really meaning the actual spoke design of the rims. Just the fact that the wheel & tyre combo fit the size of car and wheel arch.
As an example, you may love or hate this:
But there is no denying the wheels are not in proportion with the rest of the car. They dominate the visual impact.
