Now then chaps I am sure I can get an instant answer.
Did the government roll the tax exempt year forward or not, so what is the latest year that a car is now tax free?

Thanks.

As it states in the link above, currently any vehicle built up until the end 1975 is tax free.

Can someone else clarify that is from the start of April each year that it rolls forward? smile

It's set in the Finance Bill each year so there's no automatic roll forward. We just have to hope they keep inserting the clause each time.

From 1st April 2016, the cut-off is "constructed before 1st Jan. 1976".

Here's the relevant clause : http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/11/sectio...

I thought the last budget had done something to change that? I recall reading posts about it at the time.

"But the 2016 budget states that the Government plans to legislate to place the classic vehicle VED exemption on a permanent basis from 1 April 2017. This means that from 1 April each year, vehicles constructed more than 40 years before the 1 January of that year will automatically be exempt from paying VED." from http://classics.honestjohn.co.uk/news/general-news...

It's policy at the moment - but not actually in any legislation. Smart move because it means they don't have to repeal anything if it becomes inconvenient - they just don't include the clause in the next Finance Bill.

The HRMC doc that Mike9009 linked to
mike9009 said:
Says

"The exemption cut-off date in Schedule 2 of the Act will be changed to 1 January 1974 to
apply from 1 April 2014 as announced at Budget 2013, and to 1 January 1975 to apply from
1 April 2015 as announced at Budget 2014. This will be legislated in Finance Bill 2014. The
cut-off date will be rolled forward by one year on every 1 April in each subsequent Finance
Bill. "
