W123 Dashboard lights issue
Discussion
1979/80 W123 230.
All instruments, speedo, oil gauge etc working fine. The only light however which currently works is the full beam indicator. So as soon as it goes dark, I have no view of the dash!
I have removed the instrument panel, as I thought it might just be bulbs, but all the little screw out bulbs LOOK like they're fine. I also can't see any problems with the fuses. Anyone any suggestions. Instrument panel is still out at the mo. I can live without the lights, but would be nice to have them working. Interior light and gearstick lights are also working fine. No other electrical problems that I can see.

You'll need some dash-board illumination for your next MOT.
Check you've power to the binical, if the fault is internal then look for broken solder and dry joints. A common problem with MB stuff.
This is one of the best forums around for model specific stuff.

You'd think so, but alarmingly it's just sailed through its MOT without so much as an advisory! Check you've power to the binical, if the fault is internal then look for broken solder and dry joints. A common problem with MB stuff.

I had a similar problem with my W123 turned out to be the rheostat see linkhttp://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123DashLightRheostat hope this helps.
What he said.Mine did it one night on the pitch black freeway. I played guess the speed until I got home
Just solder a bit of wire across it as a bodge - means they're on max brightness but given that the bulbs are pretty dull anyway it is fine.

Sorry, just to clarify then, you mean simply solder a bit of wire between the two metal pins on the back of the rheostat thing, as it is in situ? I don't plan on removing it, because I will lose bits, and in this case I'd be happy with a bodge.Mine did it one night on the pitch black freeway. I played guess the speed until I got home
