Hi Chaps,

I was wondering if anyone had experience of buying from an EU dealer who has imported from the US? I can't decide if I would be liable for VAT or not. GOV.uk states.....

If you’re importing a second-hand vehicle, you won’t have to pay VAT if all the following apply:

1) VAT has already been paid in any EU country including the UK
2) the vehicle has been in use for more than 6 months
3) the vehicle has done more that 6,000km (about 3,728 miles)

Points 2 and 3 are easy on a classic, what I'm not sure of is if the "EU duty" which has been paid by the EU dealer/importer satisfies point 1? I'm leaning towards no at the moment as I suspect they just mean import duty and would not have registered or paid the VAT equivalent. So I would expect the worst and assume VAT would be due by me bringing the vehicle into the UK? Am I missing anything?

Is it already registered in Europe?
How old is it?

I'm looking at something mid 70's. I don't think it will be registered, I suspect only import duty has been paid. I'm also not sure if there is a NOVA equivalent in all EU countries (in this case Netherlands)?

OK. If you can prove VAT and duty have been paid - and NL (or any EU) registration would do that - then it's been paid, nothing more to pay. If you can't, then it's down to HMRC to decide via NOVA. If you say it's come from the EU, then <shrug>
