Interesting, thanks for posting.
On a quick scan, it's quite a reasonable document with several options. I quite like the idea of a "basic MoT" which sounds very much as if it's a return to the MoT items which were tested during the era of the car's production rather than the expanded current MoT. That's a significant recognition of the differences between a 1961 and a 2016 car.
It needs another read through but on balance I think they've got the main bases well thought out. Any bets on a rolling 40yr old exemption ?

Except many of those "expanded" items don't apply to older vehicles anyway. Even where they do, is there a great problem? There is no expectation that they should be in better condition than they would have been when new. The only problem is one of individual testers not understanding older vehicles, and that's an easy one to work around - simply by picking a test centre that understands what they're doing properly.TooMany2cvs said:

The trouble is, there are not that many of them although there is a list on the FBHVC site. An MOT tester yesterday said some testers even have problems with a Morris Minor (the Isigonis one, not the 1930s one).Slidingpillar said:

They shouldn't have, the test manual is clear enough - it even shows which way to walk round the car...
Indeed, but since a tester said it only yesterday, I'll have to take it at face value.Yertis said:

Umm, since when? This consultation only opened yesterday...
Yes, but we've had all kinds of alarmist stuff about MoTs for old cars cropping up over the last few years. I can see some of the classic friendly specialist garages seeing this as an opportunity to grow their business.
There are 'old or unusual car' friendly garages out there. All my vehicles go to a local garage but the Ultima is a bit of a challenge for them as they can see very little from underneath due to front splitter.
The Gov's preferred option allows for the point system on older vehicles so should enable most old cars to comply. I think my project will also comply, which is nice!

Careful counting chickens... The use of the 8 point system for MOT exemption is deeply flawed, quite needless and I suspect folk other than me will be telling them that too.In a nutshell, the date on the V5c should be used, and the issue of possible incorrect registration should be left with DVLC - as is the case now.
