Two grand is unlikely to get you much in Herald, Spitfire or Midget world these days, but if you shop around you might find an OK project at that price level. The general rule with classics is buy the very best example of the preferred type that you can afford - the one that some other clot has already spent all the money on. Projects tend to be gaping money pits. All cars, old or new, are money pits, but old cars bought as projects can drain money and time remarkably effectively.

There is a rare tvr tasmin 200 on ebay at the minute.Definitely a project but doable, it was at a fair bit under your budget. The downside is that it probably wont go or sound like a TVR should with only a 2.0 pinto in it.

This one has a better engine but is more expensive and still a project

Personally, I'd go Tr7. I know they are a bit marmite, but I liked mine. Option to upgrade at a later date to a V8, and spares availability is great. If you do look for one, just be careful about front strut tops, rear suspension mount, and also fell for the top of the rear 'chassis' rails (usually gone, and rail full of mud).

not feeling the kitcar - if i was to get a kit, id want to build it up myself.

good sources for finding classics for sale, apart from car and classic/ebay?

this is not something im going to rush into, im taking my time to research and find out what i want.

not a huge fan of the scimitar - too plasticy/modern. i want leather/wood old skool

I dunno, but Classic and Sportscar covers the upmarket stuff mostly. You have to have a really big watch to buy it, and maybe a dyed blonde girlfriend who wears enormo sunglasses in her hair. Practical Classics is blokes in cardigans fixing stuff in sheds. Not sure about the others.

As for car buyage, apart from club websites, carandclassic and eBay are probably the most fruitful places to look.

If looking at only spending a couple of grand then why restrict the search to one model? Just see what's on carandclassic/eBay that looks nice and useable within budget.

TVR 280i would probably be my suggestion but the wedges are a bit of an acquired taste!

Best thing is to go to the Car and Classic website, put your details in (era, budget, bodystyle).

Best of luck, but I think there may not be much for the budget you're looking at.

Take the roof off the landy and give a wood and leather re-trim. That will take care of your 2k.

This is what you'd get for 2kish that meets your criteria:

Two grand would just about get you an early MX5, MGF or a Z3 but these may be too modern and not all viewed as classics.

Prob way too late a model for you, but I have just seen a 1990 Peugeot 205 CJ (small engined convertible) on sale for £800 on a Facebook car group. It looks mucho tidy.

Pug 205s are all delightful to drive, and not just the GTI versions.

I was thinking 'leather and wood' RB. £2K I think maybe just about. Webasto roof would add a bit.
