We got there. Lotus Sunbeam 2172cc. Back in the days it felt like a rocket ship to me - 150 BHP to tame. Nowadays my wife’s 1.5 Litre VW Golf shopping car has the same output….

A definite love-hate relationship. On the open road or charging down some Welsh lane I was Frequelin or Toivonen. In service reception at Warwick Wright I transformed into Victor Meldrew, quibbling over the latest monumental service/repair bill.

fast in the time indeed, I remember one of my friends friend had one, me and my friend had both a Ford Escort RS2000 mk2 :-) also fast at the time with just 110hp lol haha

Great car moffspeed. thumbup

They must have been exciting at the time!

I bought a MK2 RS2000 in 1983 and while it handled brilliantly it didn't seem that fast, so in 1984 I replaced it with a 2.8i Capri.

Well now that moffspeed has achieved his aim of featuring the Lotus Sunbeam, I feel we should continue.

Woody Allen's 1973 sci-fi Sleepers was set 200 years in the future, 2173, and featured an array of weird, built-for-movie cars. Highlights include:

...which was VW-based and built by Gene Winfield. It now lives in Wellington, NZ.

Then there's this:

...which, judging by the wheels, is really a Renault 5.

Behold, the 1978 Dodge Lil' Red Express. Car and Driver magazine stated that this was the fastest car they tested over 0-100mph that year, which tells you something about the state of the US car market back then.

2188 were built, equipped with a High Performance 360ci (5.9 litre) 4-barrel small block engine code (EH1) which was a modified version of the 360 police engine (E58) producing 225 net horsepower @ 3800 RPM.
