I was a member for three years about ten years ago, and greatly enjoyed the Club.

The Club have an anti thrashing policy. They quietly assess a driver's attitude and competence from the first couple of rentals, and, if the driver fails the assessment, they only let him or her drive certain of their cars. Drivers who demonstrate mechanical sympathy and prudence can drive the whole range.

The business model works on people never using up their allocation of points. I never did.

I was glad that I joined. I drove a wide range of cars, and bought a car from the Club. I nearly invested in the company, but decided not to.
The penultimate car I got from them was a Ferrari 360 so it was nothing to do with rationing of the cars. I must also admit that at times I benefitted by getting a higher grade car than I had booked but overall I was not happy with the way the place was run and decided not to renew. Am glad it has worked for others as the concept is a good one. I just found the delivery poor. Neutral3's post on condition of the cars also reflects my experience of the state of most of the cars for example.

They had not been going long when I was a member. I found the staff very pleasant and helpful. The cars varied in condition, from pristine to somewhat used, but most were OK, apart from one very doggy Jaguar that I took to a wedding (it needed welding, not wedding).

I particularly enjoyed renting big luxo-barges, as I usually drive sports cars and coupes. Of the sports cars, amongst many others, I tried and hated one Lamborghini, and enjoyed a TR4a and even, to my eternal shame, an MGC.

In Edinburgh, I recommend Fantasy Fleet. I rented their Boxster S, which is a great car, despite 100,000 miles and ten years or more of age. They have a Big Healey, an E Type or two, and some more modern stuff.

When in Italy last month, a friend rented a rather tired Alfa 105 Series Spider (boat tail) from a place in Bologna. It was well used.

Last summer at Knowle Park , Sevenoaks, i got talking to a guy in a late 70s Burgandy AM V8 auto who said he had hired it from London .
From 30 feet it looked ok ish, not the nicest colour, by a Long way, but up close it was very obvious that it needed A lot of bodywork . Apaling paint work / mismatch on the front wings and major rot around the rear screen, god knows what was lurking under the paint.

He didn't know anything about cars , but said it went well ( the Auto box blunted it ) but drank like a fish ! In my eyes it was far too scruffy to hire out .
There are several classic rental places in London. Was this from the CCC? To be blunt, late 70s Aston V8s are pretty horrid at the best of times.

Pretty much my experience too....some of the cars were in fantastic condition, others more than a little rough around the edges.

I was also surprised to discover that the lower band cars often offered more enjoyment than the higher band cars. The Alfa GT Junior (featured in the article) was my favourite drive. While a Ferrari 308 GTS was the most disappointing (although partly because I was too tall to find a comfortable driving position).

The car I am most disappointed about not getting to drive was the Jensen Interceptor - I had it booked on three separate occasions, and each time there was an issue with it....and then it was gone!

Cheers,

Andy

They have a Burgundy AM Vantage V8 on fleet at the moment, but I would have never said that I "hired one". No - "Shes in the car club I'm a member of". Sounds much better, and besides thats how it should feel - that you are part of a club and not just hiring a random car.
