As I sit here typing this I'm remembering the drive home on the day I bought mine in Ely,
I'm not sure if you mean a P5 or P6 here but either way did you but it from the specialist at Ely and from the sane guy or the chap that followed him ?
It was my P5 na.... bought it in July 2007 from Jim Brown at Ely Service, is this the guy you mean...? It was a good one, but I wish I'd kept it and spent the money on it to get it up to scratch.

I regularly got collected from school and driven the 22 miles from Shrewsbury to Church Stretton in Shropshire after school in one or other of these. My pals Mum could really drive and the old Rover speedo use to touch well over 100 mph on the straight bits, I vividly remember how safe it felt at this speed compared to my Dads Zodiac and how much the speedo needle wavered at that speed.
This neck of Shropshire is my stamping ground (tho' I've been based on the other side of the Mynd for a good while now)! There are certainly one or two places on the A49 where surprisingly illegal speeds could theoretically be achieved.

We're publishing a Rover P5B Buyer's Guide in Wednesday's edition of Classic Car Weekly - worth a read if you're thinking of buying one.

yes indeed, you know it well. It was the three lane bit running from Lebotwood into Church Stretton where all the old grannies were dispatched!!! Quite a machine

Alas, now two lane, as is the 3 lane stretch to the south before Marshbrook.

H.M. Queen's P5B is currently on display at Gaydon, a very tidy set of wheels.

Living only half an hour away from that lovely motor vehicle emporium I've spent countless hours drooling all over that particular P5B! The Harold Wilson / Madge Thatcher Saloon (PRK 315K) is probably still around, hiding in their workshop, unless it's been moved on. It's been a while since it was last on display though.

Does anyone remember the early Bordeaux Red 3-litre Coupe they had at Gaydon a while back? It was sold off some years ago...

It was reassuring to note that even this hallowed example had a good splodge of dum dum in the gutter, close to the corner above the driver's door.

The Dum Dum is to prevent water standing in the gutter and make it run off to the rear.

This is 'one that got away' back in early 2006 as I just couldn't stretch to it at the time. I ended up buying the P6 on the left... first Coupe I ever drove though, it was lovely...!

Sorry to here you missed it. Good examples are getting hard to find and the price just keeps going up

I was about £1800 short at the time, the Coupe was going for £5k. Currently got my eye on three good (but not cheap!) ones.... hoping to buy the best I can afford this time round.

This was mine. Sold six years ago and regretted pretty much every day since (even though it was a bit of a snotter, it was the best that I could afford).
Have desperately wanted another ever since and this thread really isn't helping at all. Thanks a lot.

As someone who was around at the time these cars were new, it seems weird to see all the silver on black number plates on cars that would mostly have had reflective plates when they fist came out.

Nice looking cars though, all the same.
