A Mk 1 Cortina, I've been fortunate to have owned over 30 cars including many interesting including two 911's and two Jaguars. My fourth car was on of my favourites after the Porsches, a mint four door 1500 Super fitted with a 1600cc crossflow with a 36/48 downdraught Webber and 2000E Corsair gearbox. This was my pride and joy.
Had a Triumph Herald for a week once, bought it out of the Manchester Evening News, took it in to work, my boss saw it, fell in love with it and offered my daft money for it to give to his wife, hence the seven day ownership.
Arrr, the landcrab, great cars! My Dad had a Mk1 in Cummulus Grey (JXJ963F) and latterly a Mk2 in Limeflower (CTU856K) I passed my test in that one!! I later bought one for myself, it was a heap, it hadded more Davids Isopon on the body than it did steel and the hydro-elastic suspension was solid, didn't last long that one.

Used to be in haulage myself around that time, possibly a couple of years later. Always wanted an F88 but we only had Leyland and a couple of Fodens (S80). Best I got was a Marathon II when my S80 (with a 280 Rolls) died. There was a firm nearby with Volvo F88's but they slowly changed them to F10's. The drivers never liked these as much. Down on horsepower IIRC? (270ish from 290?)
As for the Commer walk-through, we had a fleet of those for shop deliveries at another firm I worked for, though I had the Spanish Dodge for the bulk stuff.
Don't envy you the tilts, a real pain, and everywhere I went seemed to be a full strip-down, usually on one which hadn't been pulled down for years.

Having had the chance to do a full factory tour of the Ryton plant in June 1979, I can tell you that at least you didn't get a lot of it..one coat of dipped primer and then one coat of colour..that's it. When it had dried out, a man with a bad back sprayed an arc of black underseal beneath each wheel arch and then they hammered on the chrome bits using a lump of 3x2 with an offcut of rubber tyre tread taped to it. Oh yes..craftsmanship at it best!Some great pics here! Going through my father's photos and finding a few fun ones.

Other one of interst at the moment is my Great grandfather's Jaguar, shown here in Portballintrae, Ireland.
We're trying to work out exactly what it is as it was taken in 1947, and were told it was a 3.5 litre, not actually a Mk IV but a prototype for the Mk IV. My Grandfather said it was built for just 6 months in 1947 Cant' find one quite identical in Google image searches... Anyone have any ideas?

There'll be real Jag experts sooner or later, but for the time being I have to say that that looks like a MkV, which came out in the autumn of 1948. The 2.5 and 3.5 engines of the essentially pre-war design (I think retrospectively called the MkIV) were carried over to the new model, which had a slightly more modern body. The spats are the giveaway.
Maybe your grandfather is a year out with the date of the photo?
