That was allowed in those days ... cars usually had a fog light on the near side and a spotlight on the offside

I hope that this fits in with the 'Classic' theme. I owned this one in the early 1970s.

In 40 years I've forgotten the precise details about the car...

Yes, I think they were old fashioned 'fog' lights, and useless too.

I don't think it was a Lenham, I recall that they were more attractive with long side windows and a side mounted fuel filler.

It may have been an Ashley - it was on the car when I bought it. It was pretty useless, letting water into the boot and into the doors, it created a terrible blind spot, and the fuel filler was central to the rear window and connected to the fuel tank by a piece of plastic pipe without any significant means of preventing fuel from escaping. I fitted perspex quarter windows into the hardtop to improve visibilty.

I soon realised that the car was a bit of a heap, the drivers floor was made of a couple of old oil cans riveted in place.I pretty soon sold the hardtop as I found the soft top to be more weatherproof. I sold the wire wheels, because the spokes rattled, and replaced them with steel wheels, and ditched the fog lights in favour of Cibie spotlights. Also changed the grill for a GT6 one, and fitted fibreglass rear wings and sills. It then looked like this...

Very nice with it's rare h/top, body coloured wheels & the lights are nicely mounted. I'll bet it made you feel great.

Yes, at the time I was very proud of it and have always maintained a fondness for those Spitfire 4s.

How expensive were Rolls' chassis (with a trade body) compared to the others available then?

Good question, not much I'd imagine in the late '30's.
The centre car is Rolls-Royce Phantom I (#57HC) Salmons & Sons fixed head coupé delivered in January 1926 to H. Bevan.

Obviously not because the very things you highlight are the things he changed laugh

Looking back 40 years I now feel it's more interesting to see the car with the accessories rather than without. At the time the car was nearly 10 years old and I wanted a car that looked newer not older and therefore felt justified in changing to the steel wheels and trendy 'Cibie' spotlights.

Wait until you see what I did with my Triumph Vitesse MkII.

As someone who was driving a 1959 MGA back then I empathise with you on the leaks. Rain used to come in under the front of the hood and flick into my face! Sliding side-screens, leaking hood, fun with roof down though. smile

Here is a shot of my father Frank Collins competing at a Harrow Car Club Autotest in my mum`s Triumph Vitesse mk1. The venue was Brentford Market on a Sunday morning in the early 70`s..........Martin
