It doesn't change much over the years, does it? Le Patron must have retired though; possibly long since. I haven't been since 1991.

This was a week last Thursday.

Had a long chat with Martin Overington one Saturday last before the start of the race. A really nice guy, very enthusiastic, and full of what the future holds. As a local, it seems to be working too since it is getting difficult to get a table lunchtimes, any day of the week. We have booked for 12 the Thursday of the Classic. Talking of bars and completely on topic, anyone recognise this one from the photos? It is not far from the circuit:-

Yes, yes, I know, I know. It was the "It doesn't change much over the years, does it?" angle I was aiming at, for illustrative purposes.

Atcherlly, a Compare and Contrast thread might be a good idea.

I keep trying to work out which of the many shades of blue it actually is. I remember it having a slightly grey tint to it, certainly not as bright blue as many you see.

Looking here, I think it's Clipper blue, but still not 100% sure.

Yes, we had a 63 Traveller in that colour, I'm sure it's Clipper Blue - a grey/blue blend. FYI Morf, the 'plate on the traveller was issued in 1959.

Hotel de France, La Chartre-sur-le-Loir used as a base by John Wyre for Aston Martin in the 1950s for their Le Mans team and in the 60s when he was managing the Ford GT40 team.

John Wyer's book The Certain Sound is a must. It is his autobiography. Very well written and utterly absorbing. After his successes with Aston Martin and Ford, Wyer was invited to discreetly visit Porsche with a view to working with or for them.

"How many cars and engines did you use when Aston Martin won the World Sportscar Championship in 1959?"
"We had three cars and two spare engines and we didn't use the spare engines."
"Do you know how many cars we used last season?"
"I would guess about two dozen."
"Thirty one."

He was a decisive man. The title of his book is an inverted quote taken from Corinthians:
For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

Picked up this slide from a local shop today, it's marked "July 79 Mallory VROY"

Centre left, there's a Rover 2000 in front of a caravan. To the right, partially obscured by the motorbike is what looks like a Mark 4 Cortina saloon which would date the picture to '76 or later.

Here's an interesting view of County Hall in the mid 70's (where the London Eye is now).

In amongst the sea of Land Crabs, Cortina's and Toledo's I can see a convertible E-Type (3rd row in the middle, facing away), something interesting in front of it (Eclat??), a blue VW Type 3 Variant in front of that, a gold Alfasud 2 to the right and an Aunty Rover next to that.

You can blow it up here:

what a great picture. Renault 4, 5, brown saab 99 5 cars along from the E type. Also in the distance, 2 to the right of a brown hut is another E-type. For a luxurious car, they do seem very popular and always seem to be ain a photo somewhere. Were they really **that** popular?

Quite a few japanese cars in that picture. Still, that'll never catch on. And no pre-war, whereas a photo from the 60s often shows many pre war cars still in daily use

What's also interesting is the colourful selection on disply, a similar car park today would be mostly grey, silver and other monochrome shades.

I had a car book when I was a kid that told me how the cars of the future (year 2000!) would all be painted bright colours, for safety
