I'm pitching 1971 or 72. The HC Viva didn't appear until 1970 and nor did the Mk III Cortina and the MKIII ADO16 didn't come out until 1971

Marina Coupe next to the 1800 makes it 1971 at earliest.

They had new cars in mill towns up North? Oh, no, that doesn't fit in with my preconceptions at all.

Yes, but that photo was taken in 1995!

How about this then - taken probably less than 10 years after the "County Hall" picture a couple of pages back. Look how modern everything looks!! There is a variety of "types" of vehicles compared to the rows of 3 box saloons from a decade before, plus a huge influx of foreign brands.

I like the Mark 1 facelift Scirocco on "row 1" bottom right, next to the SD1, I think there's a W123 Merc at the right hand end of "row 4" next to the yellow Spitfire, plus some tourists checking under the bottom of an Opel I think. Worst car? Must be the red Zastava Yugo 2 to the right of the tourists surely!

I'd rather have the Yugo than the Reliant Robin. The thing for me about this photo is that it shows you how market-dominant Ford were at the time. Also, few foreign cars by modern standards - 3 or 4 Mercedes', only one BMW and few VWs and a few Volvos

There's some woeful parking in there, the granny being the prime culprit.

Is there a Fiat 3p next to an Alfasud, 5th row in line with big ben?
To be strictly pedantic it is a 128 SL Coupe, not a 3P.

I had forgotten how recently that was a surface car park - I guess the clue is in the name now - Jubilee Gardens - was re landscaped in 1977 and again in 1994 after they'd sunk a grout shaft for the jubilee line extension through it. They lost the last vestige of surface parking there at the same time.

Photos of that era always remind me that, back in the day, premium cars were.....errr.....premium; only one XJ6, no Mercedes and relatively few Rovers
Top pedantry, is it the same shape as a 3p? Looking at it again it looks like it might have a boot rather than a hatch which I thought the 3p had.

I think the car with the 'tourists' is a Taunus. Maybe a 17M. But what about the caravanette next to the Marina van? Not a Commer, could it be a Barkas? Badge on the grille looks DKW.

But a Uk registered opel cavalier, rather then a vauxhall...

Whats the broken down car with the silver bag on the roof? And the white car two left from the bedford ca? Fiat 131?? And the black escort next to the badly parked granada. Early Xr3i??

I'd agree with the 131 and XR3.

What's the car to the right of the yellow spitfire, 4th row far right?

Looks to me like a W126 S Class MB, but I'm on a lappy and it's late and I'm tired...

I'd go with '71/73 as well, as Series 2 P6 Rover can be seen in shot.

I wonder if that's the mill owner's Rover outside? It and the company name appear to be nicely in focus.

There's nowt wrong wi' Granny's parking. She's got that little Fiesta well inside the lines... wink

I'm just giggling at the 'catalogue pose' from the chap in the white daps stood leaning on the blue Reliant in the foreground. (Cool car, Bro!)

Also, middle of the back row, Red Capri, Blue Skoda Estelle (I think?), what's the yellow small hatch? (Chrysler/Talbot?), then a White SD1.

Samba, perhaps, for the yellow hatch?

Is that bloke about to break into the Toyota Celica next to the white Cortina? Looks a bit shifty.
