My ex-wife had one in that vivid egg-yellow colour. She seized the engine on the Acle straight (A47) one day simply because (apart from not checking the car's coolant on a regular basis) the fecking thing didn't have a water temperature gauge. And we moan today if it doesn't have sat-nav.

Neat touch in getting the same parking spot each time! You liked the rear wiper and bumper bar accessories it would seem?
Thank you, I thought so.

I did!

2nd car
Snap!

I had a Tara Green 1275GT back in 1989.

It was an unusual colour for a Mini even back then.

I was 20 years old at the time.

Dad and I rebuilt the engine with a Piper 270, Maniflow LCB, MG Metro inlet and carb and a flowed head. Turned it into a flying machine.

Looked fab on the Cosmics.

Drove it flat out for three years, and it never missed a beat.

It was absolutely solid and in pretty fine condition.

Sold the damn thing for £850.

Not only did my ex have a Viva HC, but like you I passed my test in an HB (all sage green, everything including the steering-wheel) and my first car was an HA, the SL model with lockable glove box and chrome wheel trims. It lost all power at around 60k on the odometer, and had to have a rebore and new pistons etc.. Those were the days.

Wow, but anyway, as we're on the subject here's one of mine from 1974
A fine looking beast. If you haven't got it already, it's worth buying a book called 'auto architect' by Gerald Palmer who designed the Pathfinder.

Thanks I'll see if I can get that. My brother and I both also had Magnettes. He a ZB Varitone (perversely in all black) and I had a ZA.

Wow! As you say Tara green very rare for a 1275gt (had mine in 1982 when I was 23, I think), however I just couldn't live with it & sold it to get the (older) black one. As you can see I had Wolfrace Slots on mine! I didn't do any mods on this, but the black one had 1 3/4 inch SU LCB etc

I can't find a picture of the front, but I had spot lights like yours as well.

Nice couple of shots, do you know where or when? Looks like early-mid '70s, with lots of 1960s stuff still around.

Some other great photos above, good to the Vivas and Clubmans - very much the sort of thing I remember as a car-obsessed child of the '70s.

A few more I've scanned-in, with a mixture of makes and models which I hope will jog a few memories....

BMW 323i E21 1GYC c.1980 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr

This plate might be familiar to somebody? Apparently now on a 2002 BMW 318Ci. The Herald's plate 9568TJ is now worn by a Mercedes SLK according to Cartell. The Capri 2.0 Ghia PGH899V is, so far at least, the only car I've found that's lasted into fairly recent times, with DVLA suggesting it came off the road in 2002.

1979 Fiat Strada 75 CL VCK321V c.1980 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr

Stripy!

1974/75 Audi 100 LS SVY438N c.1980 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr

Interesting to consider where Audi have got to since cars like this. I remember these 100s being distinctive and never particularly common. Wolseley 1500 in the background also worthy of note, DVLA says it lasted until 1987.

1975/76 Honda Civic NHG170P c.1980 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr

These Civics were/are very capable things, I drove a friend's smart example just recently. In the late '80s I remember them being popular in local Autocross events (Crown Wheel Auto Club in Suffolk/Essex). A fine selection of other '70s stuff in the background, with an early Avenger and a Mini that ended its days painted black and fitted with a 1275cc engine according to DVLA.

As I have just wasted most of my weekend reading all 227 pages of this thread I thought it only fair to add a few more pictures.

Starting with my Dad's first Mini

Another Mini. I'm sure the PH cognoscenti will advise whether it was a 998, 1071 or 1275

And on to something a little bigger but in the theme of this thread perhaps.

By now I was also on the scene, so Mum had a car too

This was Dad's next car, he was working in the motor trade, so you can see the connection

He then had this (amongst others as they seemed to come and go quite quickly at this time)

And this (which at the age of 6/7 I squeezed into the back seat all the way down to Italy)

Which was then swapped for an Orange MGB GT (no pics), which made way for this (one of my favourites)

I think the Triumph was the last BL car my Dad owned as the dealership switched over to Renault. If anyone is interested I'll post the Renaults separately.

Almost to come full circle, this was my first car. PH geeks amongst you may care that the grille was not the original one - I managed to "fix" it when I ran into the back of an Opel Manta. Fortunately the fog lights took the damage.

hippy

The TVR is mine and the plate has been on quite a few cars over the years. If you are interested I posted a little history of the number plate here.

And sorry the SD1 was the last BL car my dad owned. For completeness here it is, with me at the Nurburgring.
