Can I join in ?

My first car in 1965 - a Wolseley 14/40 1500cc

Then my second car - a 1937 MG TA about 1968

and finally car no. 4 - a Morgan 4/4 series V competition with the late Mrs C in about 1975. Happy days - sold when the arabs rationed petrol and the high compression pistons wouldn't run on less that 5 star petrol.

Me in 1980, I think in Bristol.
Seeing a Ferrari back then was a very rare and exciting thing to happen! smile

What was the price of the 308 in 1980? £20k? A steel bodied 308 in top condition is now about £100k - £120k, so a x5 to x6 increase. The scabby mark 1 escort in the background has probably given a return of x10 in the same time!! Who'd have thunk it.

Good guess!

I just dug out 'Car' magazine from September 1979 and the list price for the 308 GTS was £19,901.

Escorts (Mk2) ranged from £2,661 (1100 Popular) to £5,160 (RS2000 Custom).

Not sure if this qualifies or not, but this is me on 10 September 1972 at Brands Hatch. It must have been one of the few occasions when I overtook somebody else!

Great photo!!!

In a similar vein - yours truly at Silverstone in 1985.

I still have the car but unfortunately not the hair !!!!!!

My old man paid £1000 for a 1928 Royal Enfield sidecar outfit in 1980. It's probably worth around 20x that now smile

Yes, but I'll wager that the Escort has long since been scrapped, whereas there would be a good chance that the 308 is still on the road.

Ignore the cars in the background and it could almost be 1985.

If the Escort was an RS1600 or a Twin Cam, the value wouldn't be a lot less than the 308!

308/328 cars were undervalued for so long - it wasn't so long ago that they were 25 grand.

I remeber going to some Earls Court show in the late 80's and there was a very nice black 308 with genuine 60kish for 10k yikes

Yes, I can remember that it was bought from a dealer called Byatts in Fenton. My dad worked in the Potteries even though we lived just over the county border in Alsager.
