What has this to do with the thread though, unless it was 30 years ago or so of course

I remember that this was one of the few times I didn't have a camera with me;
so went to the nearest newsagent and bought one of those cardboard disposable cameras.

Those pictures from New York are great. I was over there on business until yesterday and you won't see anything interesting in Manhatten now. Even the cabs are the normal boring Prius's etc. In fact London has a far more diverse car culture, last night was out in town and parked outside my office in Broadgate was a wonderful two-tone coral 60's rambler that wouldn't look out of place in those shots.

Considering those cars are only a few years old they look really battered, faded etc. Great pics

the 62 Buick with some sort of tape covering up the terminal rot, in 1974

disposable cars in those days

mildly interestingly, that was the year Buick replaced their old aluminium 215ci V8, and sold it off to Rover

Have no idea why I decided to take this picture of the centre of Tenterden in Spring 1974, but it now shows a lost world. I guess that is a genuine Fiat 125 on the right. Apart from that and the Peugeot 204 estate on the left, a Fiat 127 mainly hidden behind it and the very 70s yellow Volvo 144/145 estate everything else appears to be British made - a different world indeed. I would guess that everything in the picture has now gone to the great car park in the sky.

The Austin Mini Clubman Traveller is the only one what's plate I can read. It's a February 1973 car and was recorded as "untaxed" as at September 1984. Not exactly a "good innings", even for a 1970s British rot-box.

Thanks for this - have looked at the original, which is not a lot more help - the white Mk1 Escort Van has a reg starting FUM 89, and my best guess at the reg of the Maxi approaching us is HKO 430L.

Of course when I said a "Volvo 144/145 estate" of course I meant a Volvo 145! (We had such fun with the Volvo notation when the 360 came out, which was definitely a niche product going on the model name!)

HKO 430L doesn't look correct - that plate comes back as a red 850cc Austin Mini (untaxed from September 1992).

I swapped the 'D' for an 'O' and the '3' for an '8', but that brought back Austin 1300 GTs and Vauxhall Vivas, no Maxis.

Was that the Dukes of Hazzard version? No doors, had to get in through the windows?

That is correct, although the six cylinder engine gave it a surprising turn of speed for what was essentially a Daf. I presume that the rear mounted transaxle in this model was to dial out the understeer caused by the weight of the Volvo six cylinder lump, and was not to accommodate the original intention of using the Daf rubber band transmission, as most people think!

The 360 never had the 6-cyl Volvo engine in it, it used the 2.0 4 cyl Volvo B-series engine.
