(We had such fun with the Volvo notation when the 360 came out, which was definitely a niche product going on the model name!)
Was that the Dukes of Hazzard version? No doors, had to get in through the windows?
That is correct, although the six cylinder engine gave it a surprising turn of speed for what was essentially a Daf. I presume that the rear mounted transaxle in this model was to dial out the understeer caused by the weight of the Volvo six cylinder lump, and was not to accommodate the original intention of using the Daf rubber band transmission, as most people think!
The 360 never had the 6-cyl Volvo engine in it, it used the 2.0 4 cyl Volvo B-series engine.
Oops biglaugh

Thanks for this - have looked at the original, which is not a lot more help - the white Mk1 Escort Van has a reg starting FUM 89, and my best guess at the reg of the Maxi approaching us is HKO 430L.
HKO 430L doesn't look correct - that plate comes back as a red 850cc Austin Mini (untaxed from September 1992).

I swapped the 'D' for an 'O' and the '3' for an '8', but that brought back Austin 1300 GTs and Vauxhall Vivas, no Maxis.
Apologies - having the advantage of the original I have determined that it was HKO 450 L - Austin Maxi 1750HL, reg 6/3/73,Tax due 1/12/87. Fourteen years is a bit more like it.

And who said that you need a sense of humour to drive a Volvo!

Having had 2 of these things, you really really dont want a big heavy engine in them.

The numbers used to indicate the series/cylinders/doors so 145 was series 1, 4 cylinders,5 doors. 264 was series 2, 6 cylinders and 4 doors and so on

So using the old way of naming the 360 meant it should have had 6 cylinders and no doors!

Ill go get my anorak...
I grew up in house with too many volvos, and wished my father would buy a saab or an opel commordore, or a granada or a citroen cx in fact anything other than another volvo!
I used to go to the Birmingham motor show and order him the brochures in the hope he would buy something different.

Great seeing that LA picture. That got me thinking.....[with apologies for being off topic] The T-Bird at the front reminded me of my recent barn find:

An up to date picture of my only surviving Dinky & Corgi toys. I sold the lot years ago to fund my daughters pram & things. I saved these two favourites. The T-Bird because it reminded me of watching 77 Sunset Strip as a boy, Efrem driving his '59 T-Bird and Cookie combing his hair. I was Efrem when I played with it. The Rambler Station Wagon just because I always thought they looked cool. I could never get my dad to buy an Estate. Long gone is my Riley Pathfinder Police Car from Inspector Lockhart, chasing villains in No Hiding Place [I think it was actually a Wolseley]. My Chevy Highway Patrol Car from Chief Dan Mathews [Broderick Crawford] Highway Patrol and the Ford Zephyr from Z-Cars.
I could go on.....Sorry for the interlude, my mind wanders at times.

I used to own a 1958 Chevy two door wagon, bought it in 1977. Happily it survives and lives in Finland. Actually at one time I had four '58 Chevy's. Now I have just one '59 Impala.

And the models are great, I've got way too many and keep buying more! Loads of memories of playing with them when I was but a boy.

Apart from that and the Peugeot 204 estate on the left, a Fiat 127 mainly hidden behind it and the very 70s yellow Volvo 144/145 estate everything else appears to be British made - a different world indeed. I would guess that everything in the picture has now gone to the great car park in the sky.

I posed this right at the beginning of the thread, but here's the same place about 10 years earlier with my great grandparents standing next to their PA Cresta along with my great uncle.

These are pictures taken by my Great Grandad in the early 60s, I have only scanned a small selection of them so far so there are probably a lot more.
Where was that taken ? Is that a German number plate ?

What a cracking vintage Mercedes picture, on that theme I have a vintage Merc picture [apologies if I have posted it before]:

Here is my mom and pop in, I think, the late 70's in their favourite holiday destination Malta. My dad knew the Car Hire proprietor from his RAF days. I think he had been ground crew at Luqa airport. When my pop met him again in the 60's he told my pop, "Always ask for me, you can have my own Merc for the price of our smallest car!" Such was the reverence the Maltese hold ex RAF people.
I wonder if he still has the car?
Happy days.

I believe it is Aachen, they seemed to go there every year, I think it was with the local Rotary club. There are still a lot more slides which I'll scan when I get a chance.

Nice pics again. Merry Christmas everyone.

As a quiet interlude some unseen old Birmingham pictures:

I like the convertible car on the right. Anyone know what it is? Looks French to me. The picture is captioned Witton Road, Aston 1939.

Strange looking car on the left with the wide arches. Again what is it, anyone? I don't know. Captioned Erdington High Street. Probably mid 1950's.

This next pair of pics are said to be BSA road testers 1950's:

A great shot dated 1926 of Roberts & Co Garage, Yardley Road:

This pic interested me. 1960 Sandy Lane Bordesley. Look at the chap painting the Keep Left sign. I wondered if he was employed by the council:

Although very serious at the time, a shot of The Auxiliary Fire Station, Geraldine Road, Hay Mills. I bet this 1939 set up was a hoot to drive:

A lovely pic of Fishers & Ludlow [Later part of Pressed Steel Fisher then BL] Castle Bromwich 1964. A cool Honda at the end.:

And last but not least; those of us of a certain age will remember the Rag & Bone man, a common sight as late as the early 1960's:

A balloon? Goldfish in a plastic bag? A cheap Hong Kong toy?
