How about a 'period' classics pictures thread
Discussion
Hi all, I am new on here, recently found some pictures of my Ford Escort Mk1 1300 Sport, taken in 1984 (I think). It had recently been repaired and resprayed after an altercation with a Renault Feugo (remember them) on a narrow country lane. I think this was taken just before I sold it and the Peco exhaust, Mountney steering wheel and Cobra bucket seats had been removed and sold. It was 12 years old when this picture was taken and in spite of having some welding (strut tops and sills) had outlasted a lot of it's contemporaries. It was an early Sport model with the pod mounted revcounter, which never worked. Wheels were Ro-styles which were not standard (probably with a random mix of tyres!)
I had a lot of fun with this car and was fairly reliable although the battery had a tendency to go flat. It had a dynamo not alternator which I don't think helped. My emphasis in those days was trying to make it go faster at the expense of trying to get the basics right.
I think I sold it for about £250, probably worth about 30 times that now... I previously had a MK1 1300GT and later a MK1 1300E, I am sure I have photos somewhere which I will dig out and scan.

Newmarket 1980, I was 17 and just bought this Triumph T160 but you can also just see my late dad's Viva coupe and my brother's 1600 Escort Sport in the garage which I owned the following year, the Escort was P reg (75/76) when I had it the suspension strut tops needed doing and both doors had serious rust problems at the bottom(5 years old!!). BL was no worse to all the other mass produced cars of the time but slagging ourselves off is a very British thing.
I will post pictures of my Mk1 Escorts once I find them. Meanwhile a picture of my Golf GTi Mk2 which I owned from 1994 to 1997. Bought with approx. 85K on the clock and sold at 130K. Was pretty reliable with nothing too expensive needing done. There was an issue with I think dirt in the fuel distributor which took a while to get to the bottom of. Otherwise tyres, brakes, exhaust and other consumables. The tailgate rusted badly and was replaced with a secondhand one. I believe there had been a recall on these but mine was obviously missed. In the background is my father in law's Cavalier Commander which he owned for about 15 years!

The newest car there is a Series III Minx introduced 1959 - 1961/2 I'd say. The early 48-50 MO Oxford was an almost worthless banger then.Gassing Station | Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
