Quite, this is the thing that's confusing.

The wing mirrors are on the wing, it has the smaller later faired in headlights, smaller hub caps not wire wheels and the rear wheel covers, but is apparently from '47. So seems to be some weird hybrid... smile

We have the owners manual somewhere in the garage, trying to find it!

Smashing pics. Love the Jag.
Haha, yes. He's restoring it at the moment. I plan to get a matching picture when it's done, slippers included biggrin

I think that the picture may have been taken slightly later than 1947 because this is a Mark V saloon with the early hub covers similar to the XK120. At the very earliest it could be 1948 and yet those hub covers only lasted until 1950 although the car continued for another two years afterwards prior to the all new Mark VII. If you have the registration number then that would tie down it's correct original date I'm sure. It is a very fine car and your Great Grandfather's is the very best version with a purity of detail. If you find more information then we will all be glad to investigate further..or prove something maybe!smile

Many thanks smile its all helping piece the puzzle. There is a photo of the front of the car that we're trying to find. Along with the owners handbook that came with it.

The strange thing is both my father and grandfather are sure it was taken in 47, and that this was a distinct model made for only 6 months before the mark v came out. Would be great to work out there is any truth in it.

Sadly it's all academic as the car was stored in the garage of the bungalow for a long time and the sea air took its toll. I never got to see it but I do have the hood ornament on my shelf as a reminder. smile

My cousin Gerry Birrell the Scottish racing driver, sadly killed in Rouen in June 1973. Here are a couple of his rides. The Capris were at the 1972 Le Mans.

That's definitely a MK V above, which was launched at the Motor Show in 1948, so towards the end of the year.

I don't know much about this photo except that my dad acquired it up years ago and it's been hanging on his front room wall for years.

Going a bit OT, but I also remember his older brother Graham, who was also a useful driver. What's he up to these days?

Graham is alive and well and living on the Clyde Coast; in Skelmorlie.

The third brother, Ian, also lives on the Clyde coast; in Helensburgh.

All three brothers only raced in anger against each other once; at Ingliston in the late 1960's with a predictable result (given Ian wasn't a racing driver!); 1st Gerry, 2nd Graham, last place Ian.

I attach a modern picture (sorry - OT) with Graham in the cockpit of an Ecurie Ecosse single seater "Imp", Stirling Moss standing in the middle of the photo and in background is the Ecurie Ecosse transporter that Graham went on honeymoon in with his wife Jenny Birrell - also a driver of some repute.

It is Biggins - well spotted. Here he is showing Stirling Moss how to negotiate a blocked nose.

Shame Moss isn't in a proper Jag, not one of those horrible (IMHO) kit cars.

Comes up as an XK if you quiz it.

A kit wouldn't, I'd venture.
