How about a 'period' classics pictures thread
Discussion
A few more I've managed to scan in over the last week or so:
1975/76 Mazda 929 Coupe OFV721P c.1980 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr
Not 100% sure whether this is a 929 or rotary-engined RX4. Location of this one is Middleforth Garage, Preston (still there but no longer selling cars, from what I can see on Streetview).
1978 Audi 80 GLS HFR834S c.1980 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr
I get mildly confused by 80s from this era, sometimes forgetting about this version. Note the Escort estate, which gets seen in quite a few of these shots. All seem to be taken in Lancashire and particularly in Preston, possibly by an AutoTrader type publication? Does anyone know if there was anything like this in the area back then?
1978 Citroen GS X2 VJP268S c.1980 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr
1981 BMW 732i Auto GHG427W c.1981/82 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr
These taken at the same garage, possibly in Plackpool? There's a sign in the background for the Arnold Palmer Putting Course. Anyone tempted by the thought of a New Viceroy?
1973 Audi 100 GL OJB463L c.1980 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr
Somewhat informal parking arrangements in the background. I remember several rough wasteland type car parks even in the small market town I grew up near to.
1976 Fiat 128 3P SFV740P c.1980 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr
Something mildly sportier to finish with.

Brill! I also prepared cars for a FIAT dealer. We used to bomb around in the triple p using the additional hand throttle. (Never really understood what that was all about!)1975/76 Mazda 929 Coupe OFV721P c.1980 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr

I've spent hours looking through this thread over the last few days-some amazing pictures,my personal favourites are the customised 70's Fords and of course the chap with the jacked up Viva complete with vinyl roof(Im sure you feature in several Macc Lads songs)!
Some of mine from the early 80's
My dads 500 SEC 1982 -
My mums pagoda 280 SL,tiny mileage like brand new, hate to think what it's worth now but came up for sale a few years ago,and I contacted the seller to give him some info about our ownership of the car but he had already sold it to somebody in Hong Kong.
My first car-Fiesta XR2 in 1987 with me in a slightly embarrassing pose.

Fair play having such a late car for a 1st car and a hot hatch too you look like a young Gary Barlow with that barnet Some of mine from the early 80's

The Mazda is indeed located in Penwortham; it's a BP garage now.
The Audi looks like it is parked on Peddar St, Preston; St Walburges Church is in the distance.
The Citroen looks like it could be Blackpool Rd, Preston where Perrys is now.
Top info, thanks! You were exactly right with the Citroen/BMW 7-Series location. The Audi looks like it is parked on Peddar St, Preston; St Walburges Church is in the distance.

I apologise for those of you who aren't Renault fans, but for those that are, here's a few more that my Dad owned (slightly less "period" I'm afraid) ...
My first ever drive of a 'performance car' was in a Gordini Turbo - one of the other lodgers in my digs was a salesman at the Tun Wells dealership - a thirty minute fling over 20+ miles.Great ride, loose body control (not just me but the car too), gripped though...and monstrous turbo lag - a real hoot in other words. The sales chap had been warned to leave it to cool off after a run, too.
It would some years before I gained something as poised and powerful as this 1.6GL Belmont;

I bet there were not many Datsun 1400s tearing up the tracks! This was a 1400 borrowed from the local Datsun Dealer & taken at Curborough Sprint Course 1971...won a few class pots though...not the only entrant either! Note the reversed numberplate...ok I copied it wrong!
Great to see! Maybe not many 1400s being used competitively, but the 1600 was very popular for racing in the States and elsewhere. Quite a sought-after car here too, with one two recent imports.david.h said:

I had a mustard coloured 1600 one of those. I absolutely loved it, especially the power and luxury compared to my 1100cc escort Mk1. The only problem was that it dissolved before my very eyes. I wish I had it now as I'd definitely throw some money at it.P5Nij said:
Found this print in a cupboard when I moved into a flat in town seventeen years ago, I think the couple were related to my landlord, scribbled on the back is 'Charles & Celia with Bentley', there's no date but I'm pretty sure it was taken in the '70s...
1927 Bentley 6½ Litre. Registration has reverted to the original number PF6205, but not taxed since October 1996 (no export marker). It's history is here: http://www.vintagebentleys.org/carpages/pf6205.php
