Hey great post! and yes it was that Cortina (Satisfaction Cortina - couldn't remember the name), love the rodsnsods thread, some great pics - haven't read it all yet, but saw that the Cortina was on someones 4 post lift waiting to be brought back to life. Also that orange Ford Pop 300e van was for sale recently on here in the classifieds for around £3500 (was very tempted). If so I'm pretty sure it still exists.. check these sites out..

Actually memory not what it was, after Hot Car it was Custom Car mag - even better.
Mate of mine at the time (Jimmy Duffy in North Shields, now Australia I believe) built a Sit up And Beg Pop with a Rolls Royce 4 litre engine in it (V8?) Car was hinged at the rear and with a jack the whole body lifted up about 4 foot at the front. Wonder what happened to him or it?
That would be a B60 straight 6 IoE engine; as fitted in Alvis Ferret scoutcars, Humber radio trucks, and the VdP Princess R.Mate of mine at the time (Jimmy Duffy in North Shields, now Australia I believe) built a Sit up And Beg Pop with a Rolls Royce 4 litre engine in it (V8?) I think it's a bit of a shame that with all the hard work that did go into customising some of these cars that very few (If any) are still about today.
They're probably lurking in lockups and barns waiting for owners to acquire enough round tuits to get them going again...Skyedriver said:

Ooohhh....this is a small world! When I was a young lad I used to serve petrol at Davidson's on Albion Road opposite Turnbulls Funeral Directors.Mate of mine at the time (Jimmy Duffy in North Shields, now Australia I believe) built a Sit up And Beg Pop with a Rolls Royce 4 litre engine in it (V8?) The pumps were on the pavement and the pipes/lines used to go overhead the heads of pedestrians. I believe that they were the oldest petrol station in the N.East - however I digress...
A regular visitor was a guy who only lived a short block away. He had a matt black VW Karman Ghia a restyled front end and naturally as a fellow car nut we chatted and one day he showed me the Pop you're talking about. He had actually fitted a Daimler Majestic V8 4.5 in it and he proudly showed me his latest acquistion which was a Wades blower from a Commer lorry. Don't ask me how sad I am that that I can remember all this - lol!
On another occasion we went to his lock up under the arches round the back of Rossleighs in Newcastle, he was fitting a Jag engine into a white American estate car; if I remember it had a red stripe down the side.
Didn't he work for Swan's?- he was a nice bloke - bit shy and quiet.
Small world is'nt it?

Thats the guy, quiet and unassuming but mad on loony cars, and a bit of a Max Wall lookalike!!
You must be about the same age as me I guess.
If you have a look at one of the Kit Car mags from probably last month you'll see a friends one off special, Merc grill ,big lights, wire wheels 30's look. That was built in the back lane behind the Grand Hotel, Tynemouth
My stuff at the time was a little more mundane, Mgs and Imps etc
Went one year to Edinburgh Custom Car Show.
Loved the custom cars of the time.

I suppose it all depends on when we were at the age to start appreciating cars, I was reading street machine mag in the early/mid 80's in my mid teens (still at school) and so my influences are of those cars at that time. Although obviously I still like others cars prior to and after this period.
I think I must be an exception to that (and slightly unhinged ) although only 28 I love the old skool look: my current muse - 1978 mild custom Austin Allegro Estate (if all goes to plan she will become very customised )My dream customs are:
Morris Minor low light, no roof, 6" tall wind screen, satin black, red leather, chrome bits, V8, jacked rear sitting on red steel wheels and white wall tyres.
Rover P5B, same as above but suicide rear doors and no centre pillar.
Rover SD1, Moonraker blue, full on leather and mod cons with LS7 V8, touring car style arches and gold split rim wire style wheels.
LOL I have issues mmmmm

Issues, schmissues - you seem like a perfectly sensible chap. Morris Minor low light, no roof, 6" tall wind screen, satin black, red leather, chrome bits, V8, jacked rear sitting on red steel wheels and white wall tyres.

Ta, I just love old cars - anything from around mid to late 90's onwards just seems samey and boring for me (although engines etc can be quite useful / exciting when droped into old, light cars )Skyedriver said:

- Glad you said that and not me...but you were right! I hope he's alive in kicking either way I'll raise my glass to you Jimmy Yeh - I guess we must be about the same age I'll be fifty two in October...scary!!!! As to the Grand Hotel, my girlfriends sister got married there and she had a flat opposite- great times
Did you ever have one of those stupid CB radio's .. we all used to drive along the seafront saying "yeh ten four buddy, just seen you driving past-you going to the lighthouse?- see you you there" (2 miles away!!!!) we thought we were soooooo....cooool
Mind you there were some pretty neat cars around, apart from the two white cortina's (1600E and Mk1 ) Sneek?/Snoops? (their dad had a small garage in Whitley Bay) there was also a lad from Shiremoor (gyspy?)who traded in cars - anyway one evening he brought the most stunning Buick Riveria to cruise around Whitley Bay - now that was seriously cool!
Final one 'fore I go for dinner - do you ever remember a pale blue Viva SL with Sunbeam Tiger slotted in - he was called Paul lived in Shields as well... ........

Hi all,
Anyone into 70's and 80's custom cars? I don't see a lot of pics or mention about these cars (maybe it's just me who still likes them? although I will admit I would probably feel a little embarrassed driving one of them down the street now).
I love the jacked up rear ends, wolfrace wheels and custom paint jobs, here's a few pics:

A workmates brother built it,came down to our monthly rod meet at gatwick a couple of weeks ago.
Sadly his brother died some years ago so he now looks after it.He also owns/built a blown 7500cc V8 Ford Pop!
Me,I love a 70's custom,so much so I got me own!!

Guess you were part of the Whitely Cruisers?
I'm 52 and was morre into rallying then but with an interest in Customs
Ones I remember were a Cortina 3 with a V6 or8
Friend at the Sov had a green Minor with Wolfies,(took it for an MoT to the garage under the Tyne Bridge and got a scaffold pole through the roof)
Two mates with a garage ran E Types
Cortina & Corsair Gts
Was it Chris Dawson with the F plate purple Anglia with big arches etc
Oh and just remembered a lad with a C Cab built on a Gilbern(?) chassis. Just my favourite of all time. Remember Drag racing at Felton Airodrome........
