Hi all,

Anyone into 70's and 80's custom cars? I don't see a lot of pics or mention about these cars (maybe it's just me who still likes them? although I will admit I would probably feel a little embarrassed driving one of them down the street now).

I love the jacked up rear ends, wolfrace wheels and custom paint jobs, here's a few pics:

OK sometimes the pics above aren't showing so they can be seen here: http://www.uk-hotrods.co.uk/v2/old_photos/

Hi,

I thought I was alone !!! I love the old school customs and Hot Rods, sort of own one now (see below)
I think all cars should have a name just like they did back then.

Chelsea Cruise was unbelieveable back then,

Some would call desicration or sacriledge but personaly I like them when well done. Used to but Hot Car in the 70's and even went to a couple of shows - Edinburgh?
Prefer the subtle (like the Consul above)to the outrageous now but love vans etc too. Probably explains my love of Trikes even though I cannot see the point in them - too wide to filter and too bulbous to take through the bends but thats another story.

Hi Skydriver,

I suppose it all depends on when we were at the age to start appreciating cars, I was reading street machine mag in the early/mid 80's in my mid teens (still at school) and so my influences are of those cars at that time. Although obviously I still like others cars prior to and after this period.

Very true - I got into them through a mate's brother's collection of Hot Rod mags when we lived in South Africa for a few years in the 60s.

This is my jalopy, built as a rod in 1972 (so has now been a rod for 2/3rds of its life)...

A couple of good sites - both have history sections that are well worth a browse...

Actually memory not what it was, after Hot Car it was Custom Car mag - even better.
Mate of mine at the time (Jimmy Duffy in North Shields, now Australia I believe) built a Sit up And Beg Pop with a Rolls Royce 4 litre engine in it (V8?) Car was hinged at the rear and with a jack the whole body lifted up about 4 foot at the front. Wonder what happened to him or it?

Here's something I really really regret. Back in 1996 I got married, not only did i sell my Camaro that I had at the time thinking that I would be settling down, I also through away my collection of Street machine and custom car mags (straight in the bin!?). Although I have managed to get hold of a few copies since then from various sources.

PS: I'm now divorced (god I so regret that..................throwing away of the mags that is biggrin)

I think I must be an exception to that (and slightly unhinged smile) although only 28 I love the old skool look: my current muse - 1978 mild custom Austin Allegro Estate (if all goes to plan she will become very customised biggrin)

My dream customs are:

Morris Minor low light, no roof, 6" tall wind screen, satin black, red leather, chrome bits, V8, jacked rear sitting on red steel wheels and white wall tyres.

Rover P5B, same as above but suicide rear doors and no centre pillar.

Rover SD1, Moonraker blue, full on leather and mod cons with LS7 V8, touring car style arches and gold split rim wire style wheels.

LOL I have issues mmmmm biggrin

All this talk takes me back to my youth , anyone else remember the night they stopped the Chelsea Cruise ? we were stranded by the bridge for ages but with that much to look at we didn't care. If you want to see these cars in abundance you need to go to the Aldershot Wheels day in spring , normally Sh*te weather but great cars.

Anyone remember the Judge ?

That's a very unusual sight Ben, not seen one of these in the flesh and well done for not following the crowd. I trully believe that a car is an individual thing and I place that well above a cars performance ability.

In all my years of being into cars I have never been to the Chelsea Cruise and I never knew about the Aldershot Wheels Day eek Unfortunately I'm also far too busy to get out and about anymore to any car shows frown

These custom jobs look excellent, not really my scene but the work involved!!You have to really appreciate the effort. It was big back in the 70s and 80s but doesn`t seem so nowadays, or is that me?
A great medium of expression. Some really understated, some really over the top. Great that we are eccentric enough to do it. We had a humber pullman in recently, roof chopped and lowered with a Jaguar V12 runnning gear,a stunning job brilliantly put together.
I have a guy here who has built his owncustom back in the 80s,a mini with Peugeot GTI running gear, flip front etc.

I think those are proper Custom Cars as opposed to the awful new "pimp my ride" jobs we seem to have now , these all seem to centre on a modern car with a lairy paint job , interior like a we's boudoir, and a sound system so loud it makes your ears bleed , no real overall concept..or maybe I'm just getting old ??

I think it's a bit of a shame that with all the hard work that did go into customising some of these cars that very few (If any) are still about today. I've done searches for one's that I remember from the front of Street Machine and Custom Car and I haven't seen one being driven or even kept somewhere at all. I particularly remember 2 Cortina's, a black flamed mk3 with a large rear spoiler and a blue mk3 with multi-coloured striped paint work. I know things move on, but it's just a shame with all that hard work being carried out.

Renting a small self storage locker would let you store your car mags and anything else that you didn't want the new wife to see on a regular bases and would allow you to enjoy them again once you trade the wife in for a different model and then you rent another self storage locker. REPEAT as necessary......
Also if you prepay for the storage locker for say a year, you usually can get a better price for rental. Learn from your mistakes.
