How i wish i had some pics of it and i can remember some of the reg no.s of many of the cars and bikes i have owned but not the Escort . I remember an aqaintance coming to see it , he had a Twin Cam motor he wanted to shove into it and i was hopeing to make a profit from the tt ,unfortuneately he spotted the workshop manual that came with it opened it up and out fluttered my receipt for it , he grabbed it before i could and i lost the sale . I ended up selling it to a trader pal and he sold it on very quickly, wish i knew what became of it .

Have just read this post having come across a Mk1 brochure from Sept 73 and would add to the discussion:
1 Rev counter was incorporated in the 6 dial instrument pack (but I have a feeling that in 71 or 72 there was a mid-life facelift? so the reference to an external rev counter may be to earlier cars)
2 Alloys on this car look as if they are non-standard (RS2000?), brochure shows the generic Ford 5" steel "sports" road wheel.

Incidentally, the brochure may be part of a few hundred that could soon be sold to Pooks as part of a clear out of a (literally) misspent lifetime of collecting them. Feel free to PM me if you are interested in acquiring this or any of my other seventies/eighties collection of Ford literature.
[Mods: I hope this does not break the rules re advertising on a forum - I would just prefer that knowledgeable & enthusisatic PHers have first chance to get their hands on them]

Sortie 10 , i would be interested in some of your brochures , inc RS 2000 Mk1 and 2 , Capri 3 Litre and 2.8is , also any BMW 3.0 CSL Brochures and TVR Griffith ?
Think you are correct re RS Alloys on a Sport , should be Sports Steels as Orig Fitment , RS Alloys didnt come out until Early 1974 ?

Definately available from summer 1973, and I think maybe earlier than that (autumn of '72 from vague and now diming memory) but would have to dig out some of my old HAVOC's from the early 1980's to check for definate.

I had a red 1300 sport when I was 18 and it was riding on std sport wheels, but it had a large webasto sunroof and was rather quick when it had to be.

Nice car.

Didn't the early (72/73 - K & maybe L reg) Sports have the non 6-pot dash with the seperate on-dash mounted tach...?

The dash changed to the Mex/RS type later on.... from fading memory cells, I think around autumn 73, when 'M' reg came out....confused

I don't remember a separate rev counter in a pod on any Mk 1s. The 1969 Twin cam introduced the 6 dial dash and it was fitted to the 1300GT/Sport and 1300E as well as the 1300XL, RS 2000 and RS 1600. The tc and rs's had a 130MPH speedo and the rest had a 110MPH one.

With a modified 1600 x flow and the right gearing you could push the 110MPH seedo way, way off the clock...hehe Don't ask me how I know this, I just do.

I've checked, and I was nearly right. It was only the first year of Sport production, from autumn of '71 to the autumn of '72 that had the 2-pot dash with the seperate tach, so only K reg cars effectively, after which the Sport changed to the 6-pot dash.

This is what it looked like.

scratchchin The dash change might have been the same time the 1300GT was re-badged as the Sport then. IIRC the GTs were as rare as rocking horse poo, but I do remember seeing quite a few Escort Sports around in the mid to late '70s.

FANTASTIC car Kevin!

Can't really say more than that as it has rendered me speechless and that doesn't happen very often.

Nearly right! The 1300XL, E, GT & RS2000 had the 6 dial dash with 130mph speedo & 7000rpm rev counter, the Mexico, Twin Cam & RS1600 had deep dished 6 dial dash with 140mph speedo & 8000rpm rev counters.
Up to 1970 the volt, battery, oil & volt guages had those word written above each & after 1970, symbols were used!
Some works cars used 9000rpm rev counters that are VERY rare! biggrin
