The dash is the normal 6 pot Same has MK1 RS2000 OR MEXICO ETC
Didn't the early (72/73 - K & maybe L reg) Sports have the non 6-pot dash with the seperate on-dash mounted tach...?The dash changed to the Mex/RS type later on.... from fading memory cells, I think around autumn 73, when 'M' reg came out....
With a modified 1600 x flow and the right gearing you could push the 110MPH seedo way, way off the clock... Don't ask me how I know this, I just do.
Up to 1970 the volt, battery, oil & volt guages had those word written above each & after 1970, symbols were used!
Some works cars used 9000rpm rev counters that are VERY rare!
In 1973 the Mex and RS1600 went to the same 7k rev/130mph instrument style as the RS2000.

I've only just found this resurrected thread. I had a Mk 1 Sport back in '75 - a late '74 model in Olympic blue, with horrible black vinyl seats as standard. I can confirm that the "Sport" stickers on the wings are factory fitments - I've no idea why they didn't come off when the car was washed, but are typical of the naffness of that era. There was no "top-of-dash" rev counter, it was a dial in the instrument binnacle. The wheels were mock-Minilites in style, and again I'm sure that was the standard factory fit.
I got it after a series of Midgets and Spitfires, and although the ladies liked the comfort, I found it boring. Contrary to Ford's reputation for slick gearboxes, mine was rubbery and had no "feel" when slotting through the gears. And it was pretty gutless - I recall a twin-choke Stromberg, but may be wrong. It was a long time ago. It looked good though, like a poor man's Mexico, because it had the quarter-bumpers at the front and flared arches covering the wider-than-a-normal-Escort wheel widths.
I can't remember orange being a factory colour - there was red, a vivid green (Medina?), yellow and blue.

I don't remember a separate rev counter in a pod on any Mk 1s. The 1969 Twin cam introduced the 6 dial dash and it was fitted to the 1300GT/Sport and 1300E as well as the 1300XL, RS 2000 and RS 1600. The tc and rs's had a 130MPH speedo and the rest had a 110MPH one.

My 68 1300 GT came with the 6 dial dash as standard in silver and I also had a 72 GT which was fitted with the same dash but in a horrible fake wood. With a modified 1600 x flow and the right gearing you could push the 110MPH seedo way, way off the clock... Don't ask me how I know this, I just do.
But I do seem to remember seeing the sport with a standard dash with a rev counter.
My Dad had a 1300 Sport secondhand in about 1975 and having owned lots of cars including a brand new AH Sprite and various TVRs still maintains that the Escort was the best handling car he has ever driven.
