MK1 ESCORT SPORT

I don't like to see these on stupidly low profile tyres - proper rubber and a set of Cibies.
Yup, even back in the early 80's they were always better to drive on less grippy OEM size 175/70 tyres rather than the grippier 185/60's that suddenly became the popular fit when the XR2 came out (or the infamous 195/60 Goodyear Rallye Specials)....not that most owners back then (or perhaps even today) understood that.Shezbo said:
Lovely.......I had a Mk1 1300GT in daytona yellow - WNT 345K.
Didn't the Sport have an aftermarket rev counter mounted on the dash (sorry cannot think what else to call it!)?
I did have "headlight" envy though the Sport had round lights - my GT had rectangular jobbies......
I had a M plate sport with the six dials, but I remember seeing early sports with the binnacles.Didn't the Sport have an aftermarket rev counter mounted on the dash (sorry cannot think what else to call it!)?

The GT had side repeaters like the later 1300e, if I recall correctly.
So, many regrets with my Escorts. The RS, the Mexico and the rally car all got sold at different times to buy houses.

I saw a mk1 rs2000 in bronze on the m42 the other day. It was on a low loader and looked mint. It had a Roll cage and big arches I think. Couldn’t catch back up with it to take a pic. My partner couldn’t understand why I was so excited. It’s only an old escort she said !!!!! So what
Mrs H caught me looking online at cars for sale after I read this and has said I can buy a turnkey one, - once I have finished clearing out the garage of spares and large tools ill never use.Id better get on with it then.
That is still looking nice.
Do you use it much?
I bought that Mk1 project I mentioned two posts above. Not a sport by a low miles 1300 Auto that’s been parked up indoors since the 80’s. So I actually have to thank your car for the nudge.
I’m gonna cheat and pass it over to a specialist for paint and body.

Great thread, glad it’s been resurrected. We had a Mk 1 1300 Sport, K reg, in the family from brand new to grave. Sorry if I’m repeating other comments but it was known as the poor man’s Mexico. In the Seventies I lived with my uncle and aunt in Leeds. His Mk 2 Cortina estate got written off in a rear shunt and I persuaded him to get the Escort. He wasn’t really a car fan but he liked the look of it. It was red, bought from Tates of Leeds, I still have the original invoice, £903 including purchase tax from memory, and leaflet. I remember the rev counter mounted in its pod on the top of the dash. My aunt wasn’t very impressed with the rubber mats so I had to make some from a carpet!
My uncle died after having the car five years and it was passed down to me. By now I’d got married and had an early Elan which was the start of an addiction which has lasted to this day. We loved the Escort, it had the trademark brilliant gearbox and my wife learnt to drive in it.
In the early Eighties it was showing its age and we passed it on to my sister. Her husband was good mechanically and they kept it going for around another ten years until the rust bug got too much and it was scrapped. Happy memories. Reg was EUA 352K.
