So what would you get for £4500? A car with no identity which could only be put back on the road if it 'inherited' the identity of another XK? Or a rolling donor for some other needy Jag? either way, as it stands, it looks expensive to me.

One worse than that, although a roadster, fetched £18,000 earlier this year. This rarer, since there were only 194 made in RHD compared to 1175 roadsters.

I have an idea idea

I think no one would object of Toyota Priuses were used in banger racing or Honda Insights. Passionless appliances that deserve to be smashed up.
And if that hasn't done the job, use monster trucks to trample them afterwards.
Either way there's bound to be a good turn out!

Hi, I thought I would let you all know tht I bought the Foxhall banger raced Jaguar XK 150 FHC last week. I had bought it to use the chassis and suspension for a special aluminium bodied XK, but have decided that despite the damage to the rear end, the car, particularly the bulkhead, is too good to be scrapped and will be restored. I have restored two XK's before so appreciate the work that is required.
I have no strong views about what happened to this car. I would personally have preferred not to have seen it raced in this way but at the end of the day it was PLONKER's car. If he has any bits left from it I would be really grateful to hear from him as I need all the help I can get. I have tried ringing the mobile numbers which are on the fabricated boot lid. Thanks.

So, the car was raced because it was too far gone. Now, having been raced, it is sold and still considered to be saveable?

Interesting!

biggrin

(Was it not the case that the owner wanted it to never return to the road, IIRC?)

May be worth posting up on http://www.ovalbangerchat.co.uk/ - someone on there will know him

Thanks for the suggestion Andy. In response to Rollcage, when I bought the car I knew none of its history. We had heard within the XK club that a 150 FHC was being used in a banger race, but I have no conscience regarding the original owners wishes regarding the car. It was a bit of selfish wish to scrap it anyway.
Any car can be restored, it is the cost that is the question. I do most of the work myself, as a hobby,( I am in my fifties)' so there are no labour costs. A professional restorer would charge over £100k because of the hours work required and clearly it will never be a concours car. The chassis needs a bit of work, particularly at the rear, the gearbox and back axle appear to be OK, and the suspension should be OK once new bushes are fitted and wire wheel hubs are put back in place of the XJ6 ones. It will need a complete new rear body but I hope the front wings can be salvaged. The engine, as in all restorations will be rebuilt. It is a 3.8 litre so is not the original, and has a 2.4 Head fitted for some reason. I will replace this with a straight port head and triple SU's as in a 150S.
If anybody has a pair of 150 doors from a FHC or DHC, a bonnet and a boot, in any condition, let me know. This restoration will take at least a couple of years.

What identity will it get?

How would you prove to DVLA that it is of a particular age to get an age-related plate? or it is possible to identify (reliably) the true identity of the car?

If that can't be done, does it end up with a Q plate? hurl

I love the juxtaposition that the banger racer argued the car couldn't be put back on the road, so this was a good use of it, and now AFTER it has been banger raced it is being put back on the road....!

Firstly, let me make it clear I am an enthusiast and private individual so am not intending selling the car once completed, ie not out to make a profit, so in reality the true identity is not that important, or I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.
However, as Ken has mentioned earlier in this forum, it would be good to know the true numbers for the register and I may still be able to determine the chassis number of the car, I will not know this for certain until the body is taken off the chassis. It is clear that the body has never been off the chassis so if I can't discover the actual chassis number, I believe I can prove it is a true 1957/58 Jaguar XK150 and therefore be issued with an age-related registration number, which is really all that is important.
I will keep you posted on the outcome but this will be some time as I am busy with another project at the moment.

Competition pedigree has increased the car's value wink (joking)

"Hi, I thought I would let you all know that I bought the Foxhall banger raced Jaguar XK 150 FHC last week."

Well done that man! clap

If I read it correctly, the banger Ferrari 400 was also rescued before it raced, albeit I'm not too sure how much "400" was still in place - either way a nice way of avoiding senseless destruction.

I'm sure you'll keep us posted XKman.

Now here's a thought....idea does anyone ever remember the "Letters Of Henry Root" laugh

He used to end by saying "here's a pound towards XYZ". Maybe rather than sitting on the fence like the Vultures in the Jungle Book, we should say "Here's a pound for the XKJag (geddit? lol!)"

Seriously folks.. I know PH has the Red Victor but frankly if we're on this section of the forum then it's because we like the older stuff so why don't we jump down off the fence and each throw a fiver at this project? - it would sure as heck help XKman along.

As Corporal Jones say's "they don't like it up 'em do they?" them banger boys! laugh

As I'm typing this I'm expecting a deluge of requests for Farina Wolseleys and great aunt Matilda's last dying wish that her once beautiful XJ40 also to be restored (oops sorry! that one's mine! biggrin )

Seriously.. c'mon lads I'm up for it! how about a fiver each to help this man on his way? after all we bleated to the tune of goodness how many posts about how bad it was and how if only blah blah blah..

I'll put my money where my mouth is. XKman tell me where and I'll send my fiver.

Over to you.

It's a money verses love thing, money (and sense) rarely wins laugh i've seen a racer rebuild a 1600E that he was given by a fellow racer who conciderd it too bad to race, 20G abd 5+ years later he has a what? 7 grand car that is more repro pannels than ford but what a looker it is.
My own car was destined for the track, 9 years later it's been rebuilt 4 times and is currently undergoing it's 7th engine change and it's stil not worth more than £600
As is allways i find, it's a case of one mans crap is another mans gold.

CARSIE, what a nice thought and much appreciated. The first XK I restored took me 11 years to restore. I have three kids and at the time, whilst they were growing up, I couldn't afford to do it quicker even if I had had the time. But because it took so long it gave me a lot of satisfaction. I love a challenge and saving something. My first restoration was a 1948 Series 1 LandRover which cost me £50, was a complete wreck and is now in a collection in USA. One of the best things about restoring cars is finding the parts. Ebay has been a boon in this respect. What I am trying to say is your offer is very generous but I don't want to rush things and would like to do it on my own. I do promise to keep you informed of progress because the banger bit and your interest has already made this a very special car.
