XK120 banger racing!
Discussion
Ive just been told of the car being restored. Last i saw of it was still in the green paint but just rubbed down abit. I was tagged in a few posts on facebook about it being restored and even 8 years later was getting tje same abuse for it 'owner wanted it destroyed' etc etc but i think its really interesting to see it restored! No other car is going to have a history like this one! Fair play to you to putting all the work and effort in and look forward to seeing it when its all finished!! Any help i can give ( not sure if there is any) i will be more than happy to help where i can!
Thanks for your very supportive message Plonker. I agree with you that the car has a very interesting history. I have a lot of early pictures of it before it was "scrapped" and then being prepared and a little girl in the dtving seat, which came with it. Can you tell me who you initially sold ot to after the race?
I think his name was daz owen but i might be wrong, he did alot of classic hotrod racing if i remember rightly. Out of interest did have to cut the roof back off and re weld it? Just we welded it back on all by eye and im sure we put some solid inch×inch box down the a pillars to give it some strength back.
Have to say this is the best thread on PistonHeads. I think that banger racing I’m sure is fantastically fun, I loved watching it when I was a kid at wimbledon ( I think ) loved it when they did the figure of eight each car going in different directions.
I also loved it when they raised the old hearses and the caravans.
Thanks to the banger boys for giving us such a. Great show.
I also think it is great to see that this Xk150 is being restored after being raced brilliant.
Perhaps there is a business opportunity to create a website for banger guys to offer for sale cars prior to setting them up for banger racing say give a week or so before preparing them. If no offers then banger them.
Thoughts?
Btw I would really love a mk5 cortina :-)

Late seventies, when old Jags were worthless just as old X300's and S Types are worthless now:
Think of the 3.8 XK motors, o/d Moss gearboxes and PowrLok diffs!

Hi all, thanks for the info Plonker. The car was delivered to Ashtons body shop for the final detail body repairs on wednesday. My son and I have done all the major repairs but have struggled to get the new roof on in exactly the right place so the front and rear screens fit and the door window frames clear the roof. I bought the roof in an auction near Boston five years ago but they had cut it off too high through the rear window frame but I managed to salvage a bit from the old one.
Once all shutlines etc are good the car will be sprayed in Jaguar Flag blue, the colour used by the Scottish Ecurie Ecosse racing team from the 50's. I hope to get it back shortly after Christmas so no more posts until then.

Hi Xkman this is how I remember the car many years ago now. I worked at the place pictured, and remember laying out all the parts to take pictures. I've often wondered if you had ever got around to restoring it, so had a search. It's been great reading through the progress you have got to now, good luck for the future I'll be watching with interest!Edited by Jp980 on Tuesday 12th February 14:15
I have commentated on banger racing for several years and have seen any number of unusual motors get smashed up - but I have never ever known one be raced and then put back into road condition! This truly is remarkable and I am looking forward to seeing further updates.
(As an aside, I have pretty much lost interest in banger racing now as it has got to the stage where the leading names are spending so much on their cars that they refuse to hit each other with them!)

Having just read this thread from beginning to end wow what a journey this car has been on & I'm looking forward to future updates. Keep up the good work!. I wonder why the previous owner wanted the car scrapped as it seems the current owner hasn't dug up anything suspect about the vehicles previous history?.

Just thought I would respond to the last question.
My understanding is that an old boy in Kent had been restoring the car for a number of years. I have photos of it before it was "scrapped" and it looks in reasonable condition, complete in grey primer but no bumpers etc.
The story is that the old boy passed away and his widow rang the local scrapyard saying she had a Rover 2000 to scrsp and she wanted £100 for it. They turned up to find the Jaguar under the cover. Despite them offering ger more money she insisted on them scrapping it in front of her, so they cut the roof off with an angle grinder, going through the quarter light frames, which I still have. It then went to the scrapyard and I think Plonker bought it from them and prepared it for the banger race.
As far as progress is concerned, the car should be back from painting by end of March.
