All the pre-facelift cars were badged 3000GT. There were 'option packs': 'X','L' & 'R'.

Most had all three packs, i.e. '3000GT XLR' - the equivalent of the later '3000E'

But it was possible to order them with fewer or no options. There's a '3000GT R' a few posts back in the thread and, many pages back, some pics of my plain '3000GT' with no options.

My car had no spotlights, reversing lights, heated rear screen(!), over-riders, dummy air-vents or chrome on the sills.
It had a bench rear seat, plastic steering-wheel, non-dipping interior mirror, silver grille and body-coloured rear panel.

As a 'GT' it did have the six-dial dash and Rostyle wheels.
(Pre-facelift four-cylinder cars were available in non-GT form with skinny wheels and a two-dial dash).
Very rare car the 3000GT base model, I thought these were only sold to the Police?

Great thread

I'm looking for a mk1 3000 but didn't realise there were so many different models. Pre face lift

I thought there was only an E.

Whats with all the GT and XLR and stuff.

What's the difference?
This link should make things a little clearer - http://www.caprimk1ownersclub.com/literature.htm

Massive list of trim options, engine options and colour options hence "The Car You Always Promised Yourself"
So all I have to do is find one.

Bench seat looks odd.....only ever remember seeing the sculpted seats

Yes, I've often wondered if mine was unique.
It was seven years old when I bought it. There was no physical or documentary evidence of Police ownership and it was a fairly rare colour: 'Light Orchid' (metallic lilac).
I sold it in the late seventies when petrol prices increased rapidly.
According to DVLA records it (DGO 525H) was resprayed black later in its life.

If not unique very, very rare. I have never come across one anyway. My first car was a MK1 1300 "base" model. I did manage to upgrade the interior to "XL" spec but as I was 17 had to live with the low compression 1300 motor.

Was light orchid a metalic that de-laminated? What was it that caused the paint to come off in big sheets?

Quite simply the topcoat/primer was incompatible-same as Silver Fox and the Metalic Bronze colours.

Yes, I've never seen another in that spec; saw a few 4-cyl models with no options back then but never another V6.

I upgraded it a little with some parts from my previous Capri (a 1600GT XLR). Swapped the steering wheel, interior mirror and grille. Also fitted 'Wipac' reversing lights on the rear valance.

The 'light orchid' paint on mine was in good condition. My recollection is that it was 'Silver Fox' and 'Blue Mink' that peeled off most dramatically, but that may just be because they were more popular colours and there were more of them around.

Love the clean look of this car. I never liked the "dummy vents" much, thankfully they were a deleted on models such as the RS2600. Great period image, thanks for sharing it.

Rare image of a Lancashire Police Capri. Wing mirror's being the only luxury addition made at the factory. A friend told me officers used to fight to drive them which is possibly why this Sergeant took his to a remote location for this photograph.

Could be worth a closer look! Hate those arches though, like the 'miniltes' and possibly the body has been done properly.

Circa 1986, Priory Avenue Chingford, one of the probably 15 Capris or more Capris that I have owned. This Saphire Blue / with blue Vinle trim example, was a scarce 3000GT facelift auto ( as so many sadly were ) the roof was rotting on it and it was very slow and full of filler ( as they All were by then )
Can't remember who I sold this one to, but I remember i was glad to see the back of it !

Taken again in Chingford, at around the same time ( early 1986 ? ) as the 3000 GT above, this 3000E was one of my favorite cars. Originally an Auto, I think the color was Black Cherry ?? It had started life in Norfolk or Suffolk.
I think I saw it driving through Chingford, stopped the driver and bought it there and then ! Although scruffy ( as most were by then ) but solid, I loved Cosmic alloys and it also had a lovely tan half cloth interior, it drove well but again wasn't quick ( few were ) and it struggled to keep up with a local young spoilt brats C reg blue XR3i Cab. The steel sliding sunroof was broken on it.
I don't know why I sold it ( possibly for my first flat purchase ) but I sold this one and a rough H reg originally Silver but re painted black 3000GT ( and which I had partly dismantled to restore ) to a buyer from the Rochester / Maidstone area, probably via the then great Motoring News or Exchange and Mart. I also threw in a near complete tan 3000E interior which was near perfect ( would be worth a fortune now ) in the deal.
My pal saw it a few months later heading along the A2, but it hasn't been taxed since shortly after I sold it. A lovely car, how I wish I still had it....

Hi Neutral3, great pics that facelift 3000GT is and was a rare car not many built, most were tempted by the quad lamps of the GXL.
Before I bought my first 3 litre RAM 44J 3000E I was going to but CAM 5L an evergreen 3000GT Auto facelift but the deal fell through approx 1975ish, dont believe I have seen but a handful of them since.

Yes watched it with interest would not be surprised if it makes it's money, this is one of 3 consecutive Reg No's used by Ford to help promote the sales of the RS3100 along with several others.

£35k..... smile

Makes me feel old when thinking back to the days in the early 80's when a concours car went for a tenth of that money.
